As I said Chester are now down to just one individual, a female.
It wouldn't be surprising if they phased out this individual to another collection with a breeding herd and got in a new herd of possibly another species. It wouldbe sad to lose this species from Chester.

Cheers,
EK

Philipine Spotted Deer are supposed to be one of the key species for Islands... so even if they were temporariliy removed from the collection I'd be very suprised if Chester didn't make great attempts to re-aqquire them at a later date. Just appears they have had a run of bad luck in the last 12 months with them...

Are they? They've never been mentioned on any of the literature and the outline plans shown at the zoos consultation only showed Warty Pigs in the Phillipines section...

There numbers in the UK have gone down dramatically, Chester used to have about nine and they had split them into two or three separate herds. I think most (all?) of the holders in the UK which hold PSD have an animal descended from the Chester group(s). West Mid's breeding male I think is Chester born as is the Newquay female. I know one of Colchester's females was Chester born.

Its a surprise as I think they had three different 'sub-groups' at one stage though weren't the surplus males later sent to Knowlsey?. The news that Chester are down to a single female and have lost(?) the new unrelated male is sad indeed. Maybe they will move the female to another group now, unless another suitable-aged male is readily available.

Well in that case it may not surprise you to find out the zoo didn't have three groups, but they did have 2 groups one where they are at present and the other is the off-show padock at the back of the Cheetahs, that currently has the Lowland Anoas in it!

I thought they'd sent there surplus males away to Europe, I forgot which collections in particular but it's on another thread somewhere. I hope they do keep PSD but maybe it might be best if they send the single female away and import a new pair/group. She is probably either Chester born or has produced offspring at Chester.

They often sit around the back of the shelter I think. I would like to hear of some births here- this is one of the larger groups(1.3) in the UK currently.
