The old pygmy hippo house at bristol zoo, around 2000.
I went to Bristol for the first time today, and noticed that too. Are they just fat? :p

You enter the house the moment you step from the Gorilla & Okapi house.

How did I miss that I entered the Gorilla & Okapi house from the hippo side?

This seems to be a very big pygmy hippo^^

Not really- the pool is just very small...;)

This may be where they were originally kept?
Where they live now used to contain their pair of Black Rhinos would you believe- they even produced 5 calves in here too. Of course both inside and outside areas has been extensively remodelled for the hippos since, but the public viewing area inside remains the same.

This is the current hippo house (unfortunately). We recently had to euthainaise Lise the female due to rapidly declining health and last week a new female arrived from Marwell. The hippo enclosure is one of the oldest and poorest at Bristol although over the previous years, the outside enclosure has been extended to give extra space.
My colleague pointed out to me that in the back of the photo, Mike Weston, a keeper who served over 30 years and retired last year can be seen with his broom by the hippo dens. That raised a smile with us. :-)
