Some fifteen years ago, I was in Frankfurt Zoo and near the bear enclosures. I had just set up my camera to take a shot of the Sloth Bears, when a specimen of Sciurus vulgaris popped up and, in good squirrel fashion, began to search an adjacent litter bin for titbits.
I don't know which out of the bears, the German visitors, my Yorkshireman buddy or the squirrel was most disconcerted by my excited cries of "Red Squirrel"!
I know that they are pretty common in Czech Republic as well, even in city parks. (I´ve seen one in Pilsen Zoo ) So the locals don´t get so excited as we do
I´ve only heard about the pox virus in squirrels in connection with UK and Ireland, does anybody know what´s the situation on the continent?
