Call me Mr Cynical but I think you have a case of mistaken identity. I'm damn sure that a bird of this rarity would have been spotted. It's not likely to be a migrant, shoebill's aren't migratory as far as I'm aware and I'm fairly certain that the UK doesn't have any privately held individuals.

Sorry to burst your bubble...

Hi mr cynical ☺ i kid u not it was a shoebill but please do let me know if anyone else has spotted one .rare as it is i did see it it was april 2013 when it flew onto my neighbours roof in rawmarsh rotherham south yorkshire i tell u the area because that's where it was spotted by me from my bedroom window and schoolkids playing football in their school field in the space of 24 hours .

I realise you think it not possible but in this world strange things do sometimes happen and because all the stats do not seem to add up it does not always mean it didnt or cant occur. But i post this in the hope that someone else got lucky and saw the impossible happen too .

Any documentary evidence of this (at school I meant …, I read the rest ..)?

There are sufficient birders and twitchers knocking about in the UK that if something as odd as a Shoebill had popped up in the centre of Rotherham, it would have been seen and profusely photographed - and most likely would have been the rare-bird-sighting of the century. In any case, there would have been a lot of mention of something so odd online.

But, not a crumb of evidence is to be found.

I wonder if it was a grey heron and you mistook the neck held folded up (I'm sure there's a better word for this) as the large bill of a shoebill?

I stand by what i saw totally i have seen the grey heron and it is definitely not that. I know ppl would find it hard to believe and that if it is your and their choice then so be it.

I do not care that u dont believe it not one bit. I have told of what i had seen.if a professional bird spotter had seen it ppl are quick to believe it .but when an ordinary person with not alot of knowledge about birds tells of what they have seen every one doubts it . it is not impossible. Im not saying they migrated or anything im just telling what i saw is that wrong ?

Either you are a wind-up merchant, in which case, good work.

Or you genuinely believe that you saw a shoebill, in which case, trust those who know a great deal more than you when they say that you did not. And stop embarrassing yourself by arguing otherwise. Really....
