Spotted hyena family

Crocuta crocuta

Left-to right: Kalabi (mother), Jasiri (second cub), unnamed cub and Nafari (first cub). The adult male (Abu) was elsewhere.

The space under the pool (where Kalabi is investigating) contained both the young cub and a wasp nest.

Nice shot DR150, I must try and go after the school holidays are over and peace descends again.

So she has had three births with a single cub each time?

Someone else says Colchester have six now, but I make it five?

I think one litter (maybe the first?) had two cubs, but one died while still in the den.

There are definitely only five hyenas there.

It looks as if Colchester is going to have a decent sized clan, something that I don't think has ever been exhibited in the UK before.

In all the zoos I have seen spotted hyenas (Rotterdam, Amersfoort and the previous Colchester group), they are kept only in pairs or trios. I know that they can be aggressive towards each other, but I honestly think that keeping them in such small groups does them a disservice. They are best viewed when in a larger, breeding group.

Does anyone know which zoo has the largest group of spotted hyenas?

Beauval must be up there - they have around a dozen (or, at least, had this number when I last visited, in 2011). They are a wonderful spectacle!

I seem to remember Jimmy Chipperfield writing how Spotted Hyena were planned for Longleat. For whatever reason it didn't happen.

The species has been neglected in the UK for decades. Tim May would probably know when ZSL last kept them, but I am pretty sure that the species hasn't been held at London for at least 50 years.

I wonder why no UK safari park has tried this species in a drive-through. Surely they would be visually and behaviourally exciting enough?
Might there be safety issues, like eating car tyres?
Any ideas anybody?
