Tigercage at Twin Vally Zoo
Hey guys, I've never said that Canadian zoos are any good and in fact most are absolute rubbish. Toronto is the largest in the nation and is currently asking for $250 million just to overhaul its numerous outdated enclosures, while Calgary is under an investigation for a staggering number of animal deaths in the past few years. Those two are the biggest and best in my home country!;) I've never claimed that Canadian zoos are decent, I was certainly not defending this piece of junk called "Twin Valley", and now you Brits know why I always drive south on my epic road trips. That way I can visit some top quality zoos in the United States, as my own country is the #2 largest in the world but it has some total crap zoos. I'm obviously not invoking patriotism in my assessment of zoos, and so don't think for one second that I'd defend this dump. A bad zoo is a bad zoo regardless of the country that it is found in.

I was somewhat wilfully facetious above, I must admit! But I still don't see that 25 acres is tiny! :D

@Maguari: I'm glad that you were being somewhat facetious on your post, as I have never once stood up for Canadian zoos and attempted to say that they were in any way, shape or form better than their British counterparts. On the other hand I have discussed the high quality of many major American zoos.:) It actually pains me that the country that I was born in and have lived in for almost my entire life (34 years and counting) has so many subpar zoos, but due to the chilly weather and large uninhabited areas there simply are not any truly outstanding zoos. Where I live (near Vancouver) we often receive only a few days of snow each year, but the local Greater Vancouver Zoo is the best on offer. No wonder I drive 5 hours roundtrip to Woodland Park in Seattle all the time.

I genuinely don't think the proportion of rubbish vs good zoos is that different between countries - maybe Canada with its tricky climate is a special case.
