Asante?
15 7 Kati 1961 wild female Basel, Switzerland

28 10 Ivan 1964 wild male Atlanta, GA, USA

yes, that is the same list, though I saw it on your GH website.

You can remove Kati at Basel as she died recently.
I thought Ivan at Atlanta died, is he still alive?

Never give up on gorillas!! They thought Ramar and Abe would never breed and they managed in their twilight years!!

With non-breeders I think its more difficult with females than males though.
If you saw 'Asante' I think you would see what I mean. She is already now in with Bongo & Biddy and they will be adding Boulas shortly but I think the ultimate outcome will be that while she is less stressed by him as he's calm, she doesn't relate to him either- but we will see..;)

Oldest Gorillas

When did Kati die?? Please advise ...

Ivan is still with us, thankfully ... I haven't been to visit him in a while, but since Atlanta is just down the road, I get updates frequently.

Kati died (or was euthanased?) in March this year(2010). We don't have the exact date as it wasn't stated on the website, which is where the info came from.

You probably know their Gorillas are now living in temporary accomodation (owned by a pharmaceutical company) outside the Zoo while the house is completely renovated and (finally!) large outdoor areas are built for their Apes.

Regarding the UK listings on the JD Studbook, here's a few little errors I saw;

Blackpool- original male 'Kumba' not listed.
female 'Makini' listed but has never been there.

Bristol. Salome- handreared(after 3 weeks) not parent-reared.

Chessington. Lomie- died at Chessington, not Howletts.

Chester. Gogal- died at Bristol, not Chester.

London/Jersey. Kumba was handraised.
Martha (2004-2006) must be a mistake here...
Reuben- was 'Beringei' (a true Mountain) not Grauerii.

Hope this helps.

Was watching the webcam yesterday and today and both gorillas have been very active running around while oumbie has been climbing all over the frame - there is also a recent photo showing him standing on it looking towards the other house so do you think he knows that asnate has moved into the other group?

Do you think that there might be a chance of Asante breeding with Boulas, as neither of them have offspring and they are similar ages?

Also do you think twycross will bring in some new females for the main "breeding group" to bring the numbers up?

Thanks

1. Oumbie obviously knows Asante is still nearby and that he has 'lost' her from his group- hence the interest. I too have seen a photo of him up on the frame staring over at the other house.

2. I think there's a very slim chance that Asante and Boulas will breed. Its not certain/proven at present whether Boulas is fertile or not. I think Asante will probably prove to be less stressed with him as he seems much calmer around females than Oumbie. But I think she will still prefer not to mate with him(because she isn't normally socialised) but who knows for sure yet?

3. I doubt they will get any more females from outside Twycross. As long as Ozala is not pregnant there's a doubt about Oumbie's ability as a breeder. But they may try Biddy in that group in due course.

Who knows, maybe Oumbie's missing her!!

Also, i know Biddy is a proven breeder but with her age and sever weight i doubt she will breed again. I would love to be proven wrong though. :)

Its very probable Oumbie is missing her. Despite the upsets she was still part of his 'group.' It was Asante who was rejecting him, not the other way round.

Re Biddy- I wouldn't discount her yet...
