Two of the six very famous Sumatran Rhinos. Harapan [Harry] resides off display in LA. He was born on April 27, 2007.

They should let Harapan and his sister mate, inbreeding isn't such a big problem like everyone says...

I'd be more ok with that if they weren't siblings. If they were cousins then that's one thing, but direct siblings with the same parents is another thing.

AI isn't so effective like natural mating..

We all know that but natural mating currently isn't an option. It's a shame politics get in the way of conservation but that's the world we live in and, right now, AI is the best solution they have.

The good thing is that Cincinnati has already had a successful AI Indian rhino birth. Its too bad there are no other options at this point. Another problem is the cost of transporting a male to Cincinnati and from the potential of an injury during or after tranport.

They weren't successful on the Indian Rhino birth. The calf died 12 hours after it was.

Unfortunately the calf didn't last more than a few hours. Not that it really matters as the species are very different. The cost of transporting an animal from Borneo is a fraction of the cost of those associated with A.I.
