Zebra stalls

Isn't it great, how many space the vistors have and how many the animals ?

What I personally find iritating is the unuseful free space above the stalls. Why they built it in this way? Heating such a volume of air is all but economical.

@lintworm Actually, zebras are very hardy animals. They were traditionally held in unheated wooden stalls in Czech (and other central european) zoos for decades and some zoos still continue in this.

Maybe it's my Australian ignorance because over here a lot of our animal's, especially zebras and other ungulates, off show areas are open air yards.

Yes but that because you guys down under have so fewer species! ;)

Joking aside, you are correct, but I don't an overhaul of the why we keep these animals at night will ever happen as although the system is not great it works and in terms of animal management it is easier for zoos.

Do the zoos there also have small holding pens to seperate animals if the needs arise?

I cannot think of a Zoo that houses its zebras in other than individual stalls - apart from mare and foal . Most can be rather aggressive towards their fellows , so perhaps group stabling just does not work .

Odense Zoo, Givskud Zoo, and Aalborg Zoo in Denmark do just to name a few.

Almoast every german zoo does it. You can cotrol f.e. the feeding of the individuals better this way.
