San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2021

I was surprised that Lu the Hippo (Homosassa Wildlife Park) was not wild caught even though he is 60 years old. Coincidentally he was born at San Diego

A Masai giraffe calf was born at the SDZ this afternoon.

Great news! I wonder who the mother is as the news report doesn't say her name. I'm guessing it's either Domibella or Saba as the other adult female Harriet already had a calf earlier this year. That is unless there is another adult female I don't know about. The sire should be Fred who left the zoo earlier this year.

I received a newsletter in the mail from the Alliance that has a section about the Denny Sanford Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, still set to open in February 2022. It lists the major themed sections of the basecamp along with a few of the anticipated residents:

Desert Dunes: leafcutter ants (on the entry trellis!), photo of a fennec fox.

Wild Woods: squirrel monkey

Marsh Meadows: crocodile, turtle, Chinese giant salamander, axolotl, fish.

Rainforest: two-toed sloth, prehensile-tailed porcupine, animal ambassadors.

Rady Ambassador Headquarters: African giant pouched rat, animal ambassadors.

Conservation Behind the Scenes: fish, frogs.

The McKinney Family Spineless Marvels: leafcutter ant, bees.

The calf is female and her mom is Saba! There are now 6 Masai giraffes at the zoo.

So after checking the app today it appears the Malaysian tiger on the center street has been replaced with an Amur Leopard. Also, the Lynx staying in Polar Plunge has been replaced with an Island Fox. This is interesting because that's very far off island fox range but also there are only three other facilities with island foxes. There is a chance they came from behind the scenes but I haven't heard about San Diego ever receiving a rescued one.

Some bittersweet news. I'm glad the chick was rescued and is doing well but it's very sad to see yet another Hawaiian endemic bird struggling.

"A 6-month-old ’akikiki chick was safely rescued on Kaua‘i and flown by helicopter to this neighboring island. The chick and its family are believed to be among the last living ‘akikiki in what was once a bastion for the critically endangered species."

"A team of six biologists has been camped in the forest for 10 days, looking for the bird, its sibling and their parents, to place them into the care of the the Maui Bird Conservation Center (MBCC), managed by San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance."

Indeed. Not to mention that obtaining a breeding population with so few individuals cannot be easy - thankfully SDZ has bred them before!

The SDZ has announced that Sumatran Orangutan Satu has passed away, writing on their social media: "The much-loved ape was under veterinary care for serious illness, with initial findings upon post mortem evaluation to be suggestive of cancer. He recovered well from a recent medical exam; but later collapsed and heroic efforts to resuscitate Satu were unsuccessful."
