San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2021

The SDZ has announced that Sumatran Orangutan Satu has passed away, writing on their social media: "The much-loved ape was under veterinary care for serious illness, with initial findings upon post mortem evaluation to be suggestive of cancer. He recovered well from a recent medical exam, but later collapsed and heroic efforts to resuscitate Satu were unsuccessful."
The regular zoo-goers have been worried about him for weeks.

Some updates from my visit today:
  • I got a peek at the Children's Zoo and it looks pretty good from what I could see and I think it's on track for a February opening.
  • The orang girls are doing fine without Satu and I've received confirmation from a keeper that Indah is indeed pregnant and due very soon (December/January).
  • Malayan tiger Batari will be leaving the zoo next year to be paired with a male for breeding since all the males at SDZ are her brothers.
  • A francois' langur infant was born recently.
  • One of the blue-eyed black lemur brothers was transferred to another facility recently and a female has arrived to be paired with the remaining brother.
  • Several koala joeys have been born in the last few months including a male joey born to first time mom Adori.
  • The sloth bears and andean bears have switched exhibits with the andean bears at the top of the hill on Center Street and the sloth bears at the bottom now.
  • Not an update but I'll be posting photos in the gallery later today or tomorrow.
