In the Rhino Reserve loop, June 18

Taken in Mysore Zoo, 2010. This female died in 2012. The last male, I believe her father, died in 2004. These were the last black rhinos in India. The zoo has had a long history with black rhinos; this female was at least second generation, if not more, born at the zoo.

Part of a small series on poaching I did a few months back, making large drawings of various animals and then spray painting over it. Hope it conveys the shocking nature of the trade.

I remember hearing or reading somewhere that black and white rhinos have very different temperaments, which is why white rhinos can be mixed with other species while black rhinos need their own enclosure. Is this actually true? My main experience with African rhinos has been in Midwestern zoos...
