  1. Construction Making Zebra Exhibit Smaller?

    Construction Making Zebra Exhibit Smaller?

I was surprised that the construction is so close to the zebra exhibit. I thought the education center was supposed to be in a different area.

[July 2022] Clydesdale Corner- Clydesdales (Equus ferus caballus)

Saw the Clydesdale on the right using its tail to cool off the one on the left on my way out and I had to snap a photo.

[July 2022] Tier Garten- dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius) rubbing head against ground

Snapped this while taking cover from the rain under a shelter right outside their enclosure.
  6. [July 2022] Tier Garten- alpaca (Lama pacos) sticking head out of fence

[July 2022] Tier Garten- alpaca (Lama pacos) sticking head out of fence

It had just eaten a piece of feeding grain off the path dropped by a visitor.
  7. [July 2022] Tier Garten- alpaca (Lama pacos) yawning

[July 2022] Tier Garten- alpaca (Lama pacos) yawning

Its always interesting when you can see inside the mouths of camelids. Their false canine teeth look out of place on a hoofed mammal.
  8. [July 2022] Red Rocks- gerenuk (Litocranius walleri)

[July 2022] Red Rocks- gerenuk (Litocranius walleri)

This is such an interesting looking species but for whatever reason I have the hardest time photographing them. I just can't seem to come up with a composition I'm happy with. This is probably the only photo I've taken of one that I actually like.
  9. [July 2022] Red Rocks- Chinese goral (Naemorhedus griseus) eating straw

[July 2022] Red Rocks- Chinese goral (Naemorhedus griseus) eating straw

I love this species but I also find them a bit difficult to do justice through photos. I was quite happy with this one though. I love how the leaf caught in the horns.
  10. [July 2022] Red Rocks- addax (Addax nasomaculatus) calf and adult

[July 2022] Red Rocks- addax (Addax nasomaculatus) calf and adult

A brief interaction between Arlo and and adult from his herd. The adult only has one horn, I'm not entirely sure what happened.
  11. [July 2022] Red Rocks- addax (Addax nasomaculatus) calf lying

[July 2022] Red Rocks- addax (Addax nasomaculatus) calf lying

The first time I ever photographed Arlo, the zoo's addax calf.
  12. [June 2017] Australia- domestic sheep (Ovis aries) eating

[June 2017] Australia- domestic sheep (Ovis aries) eating

I know domestics aren't exactly the most exciting part of any zoo but I saw an opportunity to play with extreme perspective with how close you could get to them. I think it resulted in a very attention-grabbing shot.

Great carnivore and hoofstock indoor spaces

Temperate zoos show their animals indoors for part of the year, and build great indoor spaces for primates, birds or crocodiles. However, tropical carnivores and hoofed animals usually have only functionally designed 'dens' or 'stalls'. Which zoos went beyond this, and make large and...

Small Zoo Reaching Out For Design Help!

Hello! I am the Animal Care Coordinator at a small, ZAA accredited zoo in Southern Nevada. Post Covid I wear many hats at the zoo but what I am working on now is designing a tentative plan for creating some new animal enclosures for species we want to bring to the zoo and re-vamping enclosures...

Mixed African Enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park (October 2021)

An enclosure for a mix of African hoofstock at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, part of the Into Africa exhibition. Strangely, the only animal I remember seeing here was an emu (a remnant of Brockholes Farm which later became the zoo).

Which EDGE mammal interests you more: The Bactrian camel or the African wild donkey ? (poll)

Another poll in a series for zoochatters to vote for one of two EDGE mammal species. This time the Bactrian camel and the African wild donkey / ass. Both are critically endangered hoofstock which have been domesticated by humans and both native to arid desert environments where they face...
