Birmingham Zoo (Alabama) $15 Million Trails Of Africa Exhibit

Definitely did not go to Dallas, maybe Fort Worth though, they needed a breeding male.

Ok went to Birmingham today. There are signs posted that "Phase 2 will open spring 2012" I asked the head Elephant keeper what Phase 2 was. He explained Phase 2 has several parts. They are adding 3 acres to the main paddock. Also they will build a new transfer hub. They are preparing the two white rhinos to run in the main exhibit with the elephants. They are also looking for a male rhino to pair with the two females (unsuccessful so far). Also a new giraffe feeding station.

The Trails has been a success and that they are looking at two and possibly four more bulls (Thabo Usami/ a 12 yr old from England and two from up North in their teens)

All the hoofstock are getting expanded enclosures and they are looking at a new potential antelope species (Gemsbok or Eland) they already have Tommy's and Kudu.

Also the 5 baby lions are awesome. They have even kicked their dad off the rock.

Tamani from Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa is now at the Birmingham Zoo.Today was his second day in the main exhibit. We have been told that 4 bulls should be tops for the zoo to house at least for the time being.
