2007 In Review - Uk

The caiman hatched at Blackpool, after which staff realised the adults were in fact a male and a female and not two females as previously thought.

I don't know where howletts got the wolves or Geladas from, I think the geladas are just a few immature males, I'm not 100%, I know some disappeared from edinburgh around the same time that they arrived at Howletts, but this may just be coincidental. I think the Iberian wolves actually arrived in 2006, but produced their first cubs this year.

Howletts Geladas are listed as 1.1. I imagine they'll want to add a couple more females if they can get them from somewhere.

They may have got them(the 1.1) from Stuttgart, which has a large group. This is where their Drills came from. Also Edinburgh aren't shown as having any now- I wonder if that's correct, or more likely an ommission...

When ivisited Edinburgh 2 weeks ago the 2 males had been sent to a zoo in France, and their quarters are being used as a quarantine for a small group of Barbary macaques from Germany.

Well, Edinburgh didn't go into Geladas for very long, did they? :(

So its still only two UK zoos holding this species, but now its Colchester and Howletts.

I can't imagine Edinburgh being without geladas for too long as they have spent a lot of money and space on a new exhibit designed for them and they are in the masterplan too.

Okay, so they'll be getting some more in due course. The biggest group in Europe is- or it used to be in Rheine Zoo Germany, but they don't seem listed as having them now(they used to have a breeding group and a batchelor group) The other big group is at Stuttgart.

I imagine Howletts will want to add to their single pair as well.

They now have to large breeding groups now at Rheine Zoo i believe most of the batchelor groups that other place get are the surplus males from here.

Yes, I think Colchester's came from there, and Edinburgh's(they ones they had) came from Colchester? Colchester firstly had three batchelors, then these were later replaced by the breeding group they have now.

I meant that they came from Rheine.....
