Hi All,
Ranging from easily- overlooked little wrens to large owls and brilliantly- colored barbets, a variety of spectacular new bird species were discovered or described in the past year. Fossils of dinosaurs that may have displayed colorful feathers in a manner similar to modern-day peafowl and turkeys also grabbed our attention as 2012 drew to a close. Unfortunately, some depressing findings concerning accelerating avian extinctions also came to light. Today I’ll highlight a few species and news items that were of particular interest to me. I hope you enjoy, and please let me know your favorites (whether listed here or not).

Much appreciated..glad you enjoyed, Frank

The photo of the owl threw me off though. Captions would be nice. :D I thought it was a Phillippine owl until I read the article. Don't forget that Colombia the country has two 'o's. ;)

I was wondering: why did you choose to include news of the Amazonian parrot in a 2012 roundup if it was discovered in 2002? Was it first formally described in 2012 or something?

Not completly new but the rediscovery of the Sillem Mountain Finch was surely one of the highlight for birders during 2012. It was only know from 2 specimens collected in 1929 and now found ( and photographed ) alive ;)

Thank you, parrot included as a point of interest, I believe the 2002 date was included to make that clear but will check; others manage the site for me, I believe captions posed some sort of problem, but do not recall why, best, Frank

No worries! Are you planning to do a summary of mammals discovered in 2012, or did I miss that post already?
