From the Zoos Victoria facebook page today:

Werribee Open Range Zoo’s much-loved giraffe, Kinta, sadly passed away yesterday.

Kinta was born at Monarto Zoo near Adelaide in 1997 and came to Werribee Open Range Zoo the following year. At 15 years old, he was the oldest of the giraffe group and quite sneaky when it came to stealing food from the other giraffes.

He will certainly be missed.

Did anyone see last night's episode of Mr and Mrs Murder on Channel 10 (Australia)?

All the zoo scenes were filmed last year at Werribee Zoo. I happened to be at the zoo on one of the days they were filming, and I got a pic with Sean Micallef (the male protagonist). :D

I don't watch "The Block" on Channel 9, but I did last night because they filmed a segment at Werribee Zoo. I can't find the link with my phone, but if you are interested, it should be on the Channel 9 website. You will need to forward to halfway to see WORZ.

The challenge was for each team to build an enrichment centre for the gorillas, with the gorillas being the judges of the best design. Visitation at the zoo will no doubt spike, because it is a hugely popular show. Great timing with school holidays around the corner.

Well that sounds like a pretty good arrangement: TV show wins, zoo wins, gorillas win.

What were the "enrichment centres" and were they enriching for the gorillas?

Well, they split the zoo challenge over two episodes. I assumed the second episode was next week, but it looks like it airs every night!! Anyway, I missed tonight's episode, so I did not see the actual enrichment centres. :(

A two week old female white rhino calf is currently being hand-raised. No details about the parents, however it would be interesting to see if this was the offspring of the female who has a habit of mis-mothering her offspring.

Mother is Sisi, father appears unclear and open to speculation.

Mother doesn't have the best track record with babies, and dad is Umgana - so I heard.

Two weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to be allowed back of house to meet the little girl for about 15 minutes. What an amazing experience! She came over and smelled my hand the way a dog would, and I got to pat and stroke her. She is very possessive of the vets/keepers that care for her.

There has been a gag order on posting pics and vids online, but this might be lifted, now that she has finally met the press. I might be able to post some files soon.

I have not been in about 6 months, so I am excited to see what the new entry precinct looks like too. Maybe when it gets warmer I will go check it out.

I realise that this will sound pretty pretentious to anyone who knows Melbourne, but living in the eastern suburbs means I don't visit Werribee Zoo quite as often as I'd like to. I only end up going about once a year if I'm lucky.

What! :D Do you drive?

I've been twice this year, and will definitely visit again, despite living in the Eastern suburbs too. Its a great zoo to wander around but there is a fairly small collection, so it only takes a half day.
