Werribee Open Range Zoo 2013 News from WORZ

What! :D Do you drive?

I've been twice this year, and will definitely visit again, despite living in the Eastern suburbs too. Its a great zoo to wander around but there is a fairly small collection, so it only takes a half day.

That's why I go to Healesville more often. It takes a similar amount of time to wander around and I can use the other half of the day visit a winery or something. What else is there in Werribee? The drive out to Healesville is nicer too.

And I have a car.

Healesville is a nice drive, and there is quite a bit to do out there (although I don't like wine). And there's a more diverse collection too!

Werribee has a couple of attractions nearby, you can wander round the adjacent Werribee Mansion and gardens, or go down to Serendip Sanctuary.

Or the western treatment plant to see birds. Also, there is the Fairfax winery out at Werribee too, as well as the Mansion.

Hippo Birth!

News from Zoos Victoria's Facebook page:

It’s a baby! (But not the one you were expecting!)

Werribee Open Range Zoo welcomed a new baby Hippo on Monday night to proud mum Brindabella. Both mum and bub are doing well, but the first few weeks are a critical time, so Keepers and Vets will be monitoring both closely.

New mothers are very protective, so Keepers have yet to weigh the calf or determine its sex.

Prior to the birth, Brindabella was moved to a protected, off-display area, and will remain off display with the baby while it gets bigger and stronger.

Photo of new baby on their page too.

Not major news that warrants a 2014 thread but it appears that Tombo and Tonyi the male lions have had hormone treatment so that they can be housed with Jarrah the female without aggression, however, that means that they have lost their manes.

The last news for 2013 was that the hippo calf was sexed as female and is now on public display: Baby Hippo on Display | Zoos Victoria

And has been named, according to the zoo's Facebook page:

Our baby Hippo at Werribee Open Range Zoo has been named Pansy, thanks to Lady Potter, Trustee of The Ian Potter Foundation and long supporter of Zoos Victoria, who was invited to name our baby Hippo.

In naming the new calf, Lady Potter drew inspiration from the curved edges of pansy flowers, which are a similar shape to a hippo's rounded muzzle, and kept with the floral theme of our hippo group.
