South Lakes Wild Animal Park 23 new species for South Lakes!

The problem we have here is that people are seeing the fact its South Lakes and deciding that the hand feeding a big cat is going to be a disaster. I know that many collections feed their cats using 'tidbits' on the end of a sharp stick that is poked through the fence, this is often done as part of operant conditioning. I have friends who have taken part in keeper for the day experiences and have had the opportunity to do this. I think you should maybe wait until the 'hand feeding' starts before everyone jumps on the band wagon and starts slating them.

I agree that if it was run in the same way as the giraffe feeding it would not be practical or safe but I doubt it will be done in this way.
 
Oh yes don't get me wrong i visit South Lakes a lot and i always enjoy my day due to the interactions with the animals - especially the giraffes - but i have seen a lot of people getting excited about the prospect of being able to cheaply and easily feed these big cats.

I have noticed they are introducing Keeper For A Day and sort of full on experience's with the animals they already have there so if they are run and monitored carefully - as you say like other zoo's experience days - then i am sure it will be a roaring success (mind the pun.)

I just feel that the good thing about South Lakes is being able to watch the big cats run and climb the pole's for their food, as i know it is a meager part of their ability but it is showing the power behind them, whereas simply handing them something may not have the same pull for the crowds who all like to watch the feeding times.

Purely my opinion though!

Well we shall see, but I know Gill of old and I know only too well what goes on at that place. It is certainly a recipe for potential problems.
 
Has anyone heard anything more about the animals that are definitely going to be added to the collection? There are a lot of rumours but i heard it was mainly birds added to the aviary and walkthrough section. Which should mean that a lot of the expansion is going to be for existing animals which can only be a good thing as some of them are long overdue some more space/their own enclosures

I was told that Arctic wolves, antelope, zebra, another leopard species but not Amur and possibly bison.

Hmm ... i'd heard about the wolves and the zebra.
I am visiting the zoo in the next couple of weeks at some point before the normal entry prices return so i will see if anything is confirmed yet.

I know they aren't scheduling an official opening for the whole expansion, they are just going to open small sections as they finish them with the lions set to be first to move in to their new home by the looks of things.
