South Lakes Wild Animal Park 30 lemur deaths

we stopped locking our primates in at night when we lost 2 caps and a troop of vervets in a fire in 1995. Their indoor enclousre was brick built. Such a terrible shame, I really feel for the keepers.

Hi Trigger , that is awful . Sadly zoo-fires seem to be all too "common" , heaters have to be left on of course but perhaps they all need to be regularly checked and care taken not to have them too near combustable materials!? In many cases it is not just practical to leave delicate animals with access whilst trying to keep indoor accomadation warm , though with some primates they often have the good sense to move inside if they have the choice but in actual fact Lemurs are known to be particularly low in intelligence (nothing against them but it is true ) and so it would be doubtful if , left with access , they would have had the sense to move inside on their own accord. Zupu.

That could well be true, we have never had a problerm with our lemurs choosing when to go in but we do only have 2! so not the same as trusting a whole troop to make a sensible choice! Quite agree that Lemurs are not the smartest. I constantly worry about our heaters, most of our place is wood. The fire we had was arson but you still worry.
