5 best zoos in UK to visit

In addition to Chester, I'd suggest Hamerton Zoo (interesting species, generally decent enclosures and plenty of space). It's not a huge zoo, but it is delightful, plus you can easily combine it with side trips to Linton and Shepreth which are also lovely (but very small).

I'd have Cotswold Wildlife Park very high and that can also be combined with a side trip to Crocodiles of the World (small but very interesting).

Bristol is excellent and can again be combined with a trip to the Wild Place Project.
All of those are good. Let's face it, the U.K. Is stiff with great zoos, large and small.
Quick plug for Linton -- one of three or four places in the UK with Hartmann Mountain Zebra.

I'd go along with @Maguari. Also, as an over seas visitor you might like Cotswold as it dose a nice job of fitting a zoo in to an English country estate. As for Port Lympne, many UK enthusiasts remember it when it was a much better zoo but it offers a unique experience with a (bumpy) ride through 30+ acres of hawthorn scrub viewing eland, giraffe, zebra etc. Dudley changes very little over the years so if you want a zoo that feels very much as it did when people had to carry gas masks, it might be the zoo for you.

I am a bit surprised that London zoo is not mentioned on any of the lists

Several of us have mentioned London. :P

In any case, we know Miami_Bro is planning on going there already. :D

26: Chester: Dusky pademelon, Goodfellow’s tree kangaroo, lowland streaked tenrec, round-eared sengi, aardvark, aye-aye, lion-tailed macaque, moloch gibbon, Sumatran orang-utan, Asia Minor spiny mouse, northern Luzon giant cloud rat, northern narrow-striped boky, sun bear, giant otter, onager, greater one-horned rhinoceros, Malayan tapir, babirusa, Balabac chevotrain, okapi, Indian muntjac, Myanmar thamin, lowland anoa, banteng, roan antelope, red duiker

The tree kangaroo, tenrec, spiny mouse and boky are off show currently, of course - but the tree kangaroo should be going on show some time this year.

I haven’t yet visited London Zoo in order to express an opinion or to make a recommendation - although I’m really hoping to get there this Summer!

Newquay should probably be on the list: Black Wildebeest, Owston's Civet, Boky-boky, Grey Slender Loris, possibly others.
Linton? Hartmann Mountain Zebra.

Also, I went to Axe Valley in February and the former Cloud Rats' enclosure was empty.

Last I heard the tree-kangaroo, sengi and cloud rats were all off-show

Also sure I read on the forum that the bat-eared fox at Marwell has retired off-show

As far as I know ZTL lists species kept at zoos, but does not differentiate between which are on or off show.

There is the mechanism to add the information - if you click on the zoo's name on the species page, if the species is known to be off-show you'll see the dreaded words 'Hinter den Kulissen' (behind the scenes) - unfortunately the additional info doesn't translate on the English version so isn't always obvious if the exact standard phrase isn't used and as with any user-edited platform it's not always 100% accurate.

Newquay, the third Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust collection (with Paignton and Living Coasts), is relatively close to those two, and well worth a visit. A little gem of a zoo, it holds Black Tree Monitor, Vine Snake, Kaiser Newt, Owston's Civet, Black Wildebeest, Carpathian Lynx, Sumatran Laughingthrush, Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot and African Black Duck, all breeding. Javan Green Magpies are new. Many other exciting species as well as a few ABCs. Compact but beautiful Tropical House and new Gems of the Jungle walk through aviary for South-east Asian birds.

Phillipine deer another important species that breeds there. Visayan warty Pigs too.

The lowland anoa have gone; just one individual each of Allen's swamp monkey, grey gibbon and Barbary sheep; I'm not sure if the mouse deer is still on show; haven't spotted a dormouse for years.

Bristol no longer have souslik, Blue-eyed lemur are missing, I presume they have left the collection and tree kangaroo are not on show.
