Yikes - I went to the Beijing Zoo in 2008, and while conditions ranged from average to awful, I did not get the sense that the visitors had a substantially different attitude toward the animals (except for the bears, whose exhibits were filled with trash). As has been stated on this site in other threads, the collection is impressive.

I was certainly aware of the deplorable conditions in some Chinese zoos, but somehow I never realized this sort of 'entertainment' was occurring in zoos like Badaling, just outside of Beijing. Just a quick google search turns up some rather unpleasant youtube videos. Shocking.

I did come across this article which is similar in content, with a different tone.

As many Chinese zoo fans on Internet,I always feel shame about some of my siblings.
The Chinese public's attitude to wildlifes and zoos,maybe just like that in western countries 50 or even 100 years ago,take animals as toys or entertainment tools,haven't learned to respect them,nor take them as equal lifes.
Even in some newest zoos and enclosures,still think most about how to make fun for tourists,not for animal welfare.Although many wise keepers and experts love animals and know the advanced foreign methods,but most managers and governors still only think about make profits,while most media and common people don't know what a modern zoo should and shouldn't do.
It still needs time for the whole public to change the old view about zoo.
