Effort to end bobcat, mountain lion hunts in Colorado stalls out in legislature | OutThere Colorado

"Recreational Mountain lion and bobcat hunting in Colorado isn't going anywhere this year after an effort to severely limit the practice failed in the legislature Thursday.

Sen. Sonya Jaquez Lewis, D-Longmont, introduced the bill with the hopes of protecting the animals. From the onset, she acknowledged a lack of available information about mountain lion and bobcat populations in Colorado."

Then, of course, this comes out:

"Ag right now is feeling pressure just to stay afloat. Not thrive, not make a lot of money, not be able to afford the tuition to send your kids to college," Donovan said. "Ag is struggling right now just to stay afloat. We're not making a lot of decisions in this Capitol that make it easier or are supporting ag. I think you're seeing a response to this bill of what it feels like to be piled on."

Now, this is just me but when it comes to livestock loss you do have to feel pity. In the United States my pity depends on the situation because in some states there's a thing called open range ranching.

Open Range states are states where ranchers are allowed to let their livestock roam wherever they want, whether even on public lands. They let their animals roam across the land 24/7, including at night. I've heard stories from people living in these areas hitting sheep on the roads and people even have "cattle guards" on their vehicles just in case. Here are two other important things to know about open range ranching.

1. People who don't want livestock on their property have to build fencing around their land, not the ranchers with livestock.

2. If someone hits a cow or sheep on the road with their vehicle, the drivers themselves are still liable for the damages to the vehicle, not the ranchers who apparently don't understand the concept of a paddock. (Not sure how this is supposed to happen if the driver gets killed in the collision).

And of course, if you let livestock roam wherever and don't bring them home at all, then of course you'll have to deal with livestock depredation! And then they complain about these incidents happening.

So yeah...kinda difficult to have pity with this stupidity.
