A couple of intriguing questions from the excellent members' quiz evening on Tuesday night:

  1. Which is the tallest building in the zoo?
  2. Which is the oldest animal in the zoo?

I'd go RoRA and the condors - don't think there is too much competition. My other guess at tallest building would be Spirit of the Jaguar, but I think RoRA wins out.

No correct answers so far!

For the record, ROTRA and SOTJ are the second and third highest respectively.

Outside the box, could it be the off-show structure behind the scimitar-horned oryx paddock?

I'm coming from left field - Oakfield House (think of those chimney pots) & griffon vulture.

Flamingos can live a long time. Is it one from either of their two large flocks?

And could the tallest structure be the condor aviary by any chance?

Is it a tortoise or other reptile? I would have guessed Realm of the Red Ape but if that is wrong maybe the elephant or tropical houses?

We have a winner on the tallest building!

I would never have guessed it myself, but the highest point of Oakfield house is approx. 1 metre higher than the highest point of Realm of the Red Ape.

Still no winner on the oldest animal though ...

Are all of the tuatara juvenille? I'm wondering whether to cast a vote for Pixie - can't think of any reptiles that could be older, since I think the Giant tortoises are still young as well?

Spot on! Two individuals are recorded as 67 years old in the zoo's ARKS records (still a few years left in them yet as this species is estimated to live up to 100 years).
Well it had to be them if it wasn't one of the Andean Condor's,which I believe is the oldest bird in the collection.

That was a bit fun. Someone should start a thread for obscure zoo-related trivia like this.
