A Cupulatta A Cupulatta - Corsica

I was intrigued by this collection's claims of over 170 species so I combed through their instagram and found the following:

So not enough info to determine what species are there - if I'm ever in Corsica I'll definitely head over there and have a look myself.

Exciting news : last May 21st saw a Galapagos giant tortoise hatched. The baby has been given the name of Darwin for the moment (he has not been sexed yet).
This is the first breeding record in France and the park is the fourth one in Europe to succeed in according to this article : Corse : une tortue des Galapagos est née à Ajaccio, une première en France

For a long time the park has two wild borned males (more than 70 years old) and received a captive borned female only in 2021.

The reptile park maintains 2 Chelonoidis becki males that were part of the 3 male C. becki originally received by Zuerich Zoo direct from the Galapagos Islands. The breeding male at Zuerich Zoo is the male C. becki that stayed at Zuerich, while the other 2 males were sent to A Cupullata.

The female they received in 2021 is a probable hybrid offspring from one of the C. becki x C. porteri/nigrita hatchings over the past decades in Zuerich Zoo. Not sure how old she is exactly or from where A Cupullata park received this female (there are plenty to go around within the age classes 20+).

I keep holding out for a change of mind and that with all the new zoo facilities breeding Galapagos tortoises in Europe eventually the Galapagos Islands / Ecuadorian conservation authorities will see sense and export some of their pure-bred and wild born / known island / haplotype sourced individuals to European and North American zoos for pairing within their respective breeding programmes according to the correct species each zoo holds.

Europe holds C. becki, C. porteri/nigrita and lone individuals of C. darwini and C. duncanensis / eppiphium. North American zoos have a more diverse make-up with C. becki, C. porteri/nigrita, C. microphyes, C. vandenburghi, C. vicina and 2 male C. darwini.
