A different alphabet game

Cool!
I guess I will decide for 'J' to be something other than a bird .. so you won't have to do every other letter inevitably!
The animal I am thinking of beginning with J is found on an island. In appearance indiviudals are quite variable in pelage. [or perhaps pelage is not appropriate; for it is not a mammal]
None currently live in European captivity, but it has been kept fairly recently. Some live in America as far as I know.
It is under federal protection from the country where it is.

Is it named for the island it is found on?

I’m blanking besides thinking the island might be Jamaica or Java, presuming it is reptilian.

Well it is a herp, but not either of those islands. Jamaica is closer in that it is on the northern hemisphere, but Java is geographically closer to the island, but the wrong hemisphere.

It's perhaps the largest island, or should I say cluster of islands beginning with J.

Would it happen to be the Japanese Giant Salamander? I do believe Japan is in the Northern Hemisphere.
