Me and my girlfriend visited the zoo on Sunday. Thought we would give a bit of info from our visit.
Okapi – Both of the Okapi were out in there enclosure we even managed to see them being fed a cabbage by one of the keepers.
Jaguars – All of the Jaguars were outside in there outdoor enclosures apart from the black Jaguar (does anybody know if it is ever let outside?). As has been mentioned before is very difficult to see the Jaguar that are in the desert style enclosure both inside or out. There seems to be building work going on nearby slightly to the left of the Jaguar enclosure not sure what for though.
Warty Pigs – The female pig and her piglets were popping in an out of there indoor enclosure during most of the day they all looked really healthy and happy. The piglets all seemed to be doing very well.
Realm of The Red Ape- Was jam packed and very hard to see anything because of the amount of people that were there managed to see a quick glimpse of Kirana and Subis.
Chimpanzees – Was another enclosure that was jam packed for the majority of the day. All of the chimps seemed really healthy and happy and were enjoying the sunshine. Spoke to one of the keepers who told us that the baby chimp that was recently born was called Tina (After Tina Turner) and was the Daughter of Zee Zee. She also told us a bit about Boris and where he came from and the reason why they do not feed the chimps meat. Boris was bought by a lady in a pet store in New York and spent the first few years of his life in a apartment in New York the lady then realised the mistake she had made an chose Chester from all of the Zoos in the world for Boris to move too she still visits every few years to see how he is getting on. The chimps are not fed meat as it raises there testosterone levels and results in more aggression and upset to the troop.
Tigers – Kirana the tiger was doing a very good job of staying hidden all day. The presenter said that it is because she is still very nervous being away from her mother and the size of her new enclosure. They also said that they were planning on bringing a new male in for her in the next month or two.
Lions- Both Asha & Asoka were out in the enclosure both looked really healthy and were as close as always moving around the enclosure together before laying together in the sunshine. Asha has been implanted this year but they plan to breed again in 2010. There are no plans to bring in a new female as far as the presenter knew.
Serval – First time we had saw them both of them looked really healthy but were pacing there enclosure a lot not sure if that was because they are still getting used to the enclosure.
Pudu & Bush Dogs were both not on show not sure why.
The male cassowary was displaying a lot noticed that they were in separate enclosures.
Also we were at the Lion enclosure when I noticed Michael Owen was standing next to me he was visiting the Zoo with his wife and children not many people seemed to notice him though we did hear a few people talking about him being at the Zoo.
