Dubai Zoo A new zoo for Dubai

I really do look forward to in the next 1-2 years be able to visit the place.
(It will be kind of a friends' circle ... of sorts!).

It has been way too long for the Dubai Zoo to get more space and its collection really the layout it deserved ... all these years!

Some interesting species on their website and map, including Eastern lowland gorilla, gerenuk, okapi, klipspringer and saiga! Anybody know how accurate these listings are? Because if they are real then there's a few rarities there to say the least...

I don't think importing gerenuk and klipspringer would be all too difficult for them (though I might be wrong?), but the other three species seem very unlikely. The gorillas in different bad quality youtube videos of the park definitely don't look Eastern...

I wonder how much is true of the other species!

Where is the map on their site? I can't find it.

Go to "Plan your visit", then scroll to the bottom. On the upper right part of the page you will find a PDF-icon "Dubai Safari Park map"...;)

Thanks. I can never find maps on zoo websites!

It's an interesting map. Gerenuk and Klipspringer aren't surprising at all, but Okapi and especially Saiga are very interesting inclusions.

I was at peace with missing out on DSP despite carving out space to see it both in March and September. If they have saiga, however, then that inner peace is not just broken but utterly shattered.

I think the situation might be a bit like the Phu Quoc Safari Park in Vietnam when it opened, where the website and map are mixing together animals they already have, animals that are soon to arrive, and animals they want to have.

And it means that people can’t to go to the park in the brutal Dubai summer. Also, the park should use this as an opportunity to add more animals that are not In the collection.

I'm planning a two month trip to SE Asia at the end of August and was going to stopover in Dubai on the way out to see the Safari Park, but I guess I'll delay it until the return leg now.

Perhaps they should focus on getting their core business of satisfying visitors right before thinking about expanding the collection. If they are closing for over three months there are clearly some fundamental problems. Besides which:

The destination will undergo enhancement works that include more climatized areas for animals.

Maybe they can focus on adequately housing the animals they do have.

Your comments are all mere assumptions and could be really very far from the reality on the ground! So, as the feature article like most newspaper quips and bobs on the new Dubai zoo are a rather grey affair, it is best to reserve judgement untill such time as one does know what is the rationale for closing and upgrading and you actually know what you are talking about.

I somehow personally are led to believe from the way the feature article was written up and (knowing the local word speak and knowing how to interpret these) the wording that they will rather be adding exhibits and are using the hot season to to finish up these (allthough 4,5 months does not seem like very long timeframe to do so).

From what I know the level of expectation locally was huge and the park has seen good numbers of visitors since opening (Mind you: prior to this Dubai really had no way to compete with neighbouring Abu Dhabi emirate in terms of zoo experience (both the well known Al Ain and the newer Abu Dhabi zoo near Airport Road).

Incidentally, Parques Reunidos is the very same company managing zoos like Zoologico de Madrid and Blackpool Zoo which would give you some idea of the standards to be expected.

I've been to Madrid and that's hardly a ringing endorsement.
