I have a freezer full of whole native animals and I can assure you i'm not going eat many of them.

...because I collect dead things and preserve them, you will find many many people involved in animal industry have similair interests. Roadkill is an untapped art source (and alright with bbq sauce!)

Not sure if anyone has seen this story?

Endangered Tiger Found In Man's Freezer - Yahoo! News UK

Just wondered if anyone knows what 'living' species he was keeping?

Where the hell did he get things like a Chimpanzee & tiger from?
Were they alive when he received them?
Has anyone ever heard of this guy, are there any circus connections etc..

Why on earth would you wonder if there were any circus connections? That sounds weird to me. As a circus man from way back I can assure you that we prefer our animals very much alive.

Probably better to ask ...... "are there any zoo connections?"

Who said anything about eating them? Maybe this person is a taxidermist. I don't know the ins and outs of this case, but i'm assuming for this man to have been charged, he'd have had to have smuggled them into the country rather than got them from a zoo or circus. Could someone be charged if the Tiger was from British stock and died of natural causes?

As a 'zoo' man, I am aware of protocols in place regarding the disposal of deceased animals(Noah's Ark excepted!).I am not aware if these apply to circuses in the UK, hence my question. Also with zoos by definition open for public viewing, the death of mega fauna such as Tigers and Chimps is unlikely to go unnoticed. I feel it is safe to assume this wouldn't necessarily be the same with a travelling collection...

Not necessarily so. A circus is even more "open for public viewing" than a zoo.

Given the intense scrutiny of circuses by the AR people I feel that the absence of an animal as large as a tiger would be commented on much more quickly than, say, the death of the chimp at the sanctuary in Wales recently.

I completely jumped to the conclusion that he eats them but, well, you hear about those sickos who eat orangs...

It may also be possible these 'freezer' specimens have been dead and in this person's ownership for a long time, in which case they may be perfectly legal if they were aquired before legislation was brought in.

I happen to know this particular man from many many years ago when I worked in another collection although I havent spoken to him in more than a decade but I can confirm from memory that his particular interest is in taxidermy and from what I remember (we are talking 15 + years ago) he was pretty good. It is possible he may have crossed the line, that his interests have diversified but providing he has the correct paperwork (I am assuming he hasnt and that is why he is being prosecuted) I can see no reason why he could not acquire dead animals for the purposes of taxidermy, it is more pertinant to ask who sold or possibly donated them to him, in the UK, as long as it is not a commercial transaction and has no commercial outcome, CITES paperwork is often not required even for Appendix I species, it all comes down to the definition of commercial activity. What sometimes concerns me on here is how many 'armchair' critics seem so quick to condemn without knowing either the facts of an individual case or current legislation.

I've worked in collections in the past where dead specimens of interest have found their way into the hands of taxidermists, providing it is all legit I don't have a problem with that.
I don't believe for one minute that the animals found would have been aquired for dietary purposes but we shall see how the case develops I guess

:D I really did just jump to the point with the eating thing, but like said in the previous comment, we will see how this unwinds...
