ISIS are showing 1.1 aardvark at Blackpool, have they arrived then? and where will they be housed, and where did they come from?

Hi.
Visit Blackpool.com (German) - A First for Blackpool Zoo
News article on the new aardvarks.
Quote from the article: "The male, from Denmark, and the female, from Holland, are both aged two. The male is called Arnie the Aardvark after the zoo’s play barn mascot at Aardvark Adventures and the female is yet to be named".

The female was named Laurel in a competition to name her.

They are on show in the childrens area of the zoo in what used to be the Meerkat exhibit, eventually they will have an oudoor enclosure as well if its done to the standard of what i saw on the indoor part then it will be an excellent exhibit.

Aardvark in the North, I want to go Blackpool now!

Has anyone seen their enclosure, whats its it like, any good? got any pics for us...

I have been to Blackpool over the summer for some research and was taken to see the aardvarks - they are in the 'children's zoo' area, near the llamas and goats if I remember correctly. The indoor enclosure is reasonably large (with a an off-view area to it) - although for a nocturnal species there is little escape from the light (however having said this, they were happily snoring away under a faux-rock overhang and didnt seem overly bothered at the light from the large glass front). When I was there (7th Aug), they were being kept indoors, the outdoor enclosure had not yet been concreted etc to stop them tunnelling out! Perhaps some one on here knows if they've now done that?

It is very nice to see a Blackpool receiving and caring for a species such as the aardvark, wonderful animals! Here's to their success!

laurel and arnie are fine getting on very well the keeper's said theyre hoping to breed soon an outdoor enclosure has been built for them with a 5 star rating with a termit hole being built and glass window viewing and should be mating soon im going to blackpool soon ill try and get some pictures

I saw them on Friday yet did not realise that these were new to the park. They both were active and looked healthy. I was impressed with the enclosure, as with the rest of the Childrens section.

Aardvark are appearing in more and more zoos and seem to be one of the new 'in' species, presumably because of their novel appearance. Will they now replace Meerkats as the 'Children's favourite' perhaps?
