Bronx Zoo Aardvarks arrive at the Bronx zoo

I thaught the Bronx just closed all of their nocturnal exhibits?

So the Bronx zoo takes animals from the wild!

This seems so very wrong to me. They are also not listed as endangered.

Every zoo still acquires animals from the wild...im sure you will find that very few dont. And it is still important for zoos to acquire animals from the wild from time to time, to augment the genepools of all captive population for continued genentic health.

Zing!

Truth be told, it is a bit of an ethical quandary. To quote Jefferson on human captivity in America-"We have the wolf by the ears."

Also, I was ther last month and that new exhibit is pretty cool.

I was there about 6 weeks ago and posted a couple of pictures, I'm going this weekend with a couple of photographer friends rather than my 5 year old so will be able to take my tripod and hopefully get something better

There are three displays in the Carter Giraffe Building. One for Giraffe, One for Aardvark. Does anyone know what is in the other display.

Aardvark exhibit is quite nice. Got to watch some breeding the other day.

I wish the hyena was actually on display as it should be though *sigh*

Hyena exhibits opens this Tuesday, no signage up as yet and the only alteration (to what was the cheetah then ostrich exhibit) is that mesh at the african wild dog end of the new enclosure has been replaced with awooden privacy fence with glass panel small windows at adult and child height. Spotted hyena 1.1 sourced from Denver.

Personally, this is one of the things I hte about Bronx: signs. They've had signs up telling people to go see the hyenas (when I was there last week, even the map said it) and there are numerous out of date signs. The sign on the mouse house exit tells people where to see the cheetahs that have been gone over a year and makes no mention of tiger mountain (which has been around quite awhile). There's even a sign I took a pic of last week outside Africa proclaiming the following exhibits in African Plains: ministrative side of the site at all.

Okapi
Cheetah
Maxwell's Duiker
Blesbok
Slender Horned gazelle
Arabian oryx
Ostrich
Barinho Giraffe
Grevy's Zebra
Thomson's gazelle
Nylala
African Lion

The first five or so of those haven't been around in AGES.

Bronx is bad with signs; probably always will be.

Wow, a nice Story ! I hope, it ends with a succesful Rearing of"Hoover", a really important animal for the Us-Population of aardvaarks.
