“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep welfare at the forefront of every decision.” said Dr. Stephanie Carle, Senior Veterinarian at the Abilene Zoo. “At this time our team has made the decision to bring our flock back out onto public display.”

With the announcement of expanding into more land a couple weeks ago, comes confirmation of a 10-year master plan! 
Some of the plans include a train ride, a new restaurant, and expanding the giraffe area.

It's fascinating that Abilene Zoo is already considering expanding its giraffe exhibit. The current habitat just opened in 2016 at a cost of $4 million.

Giant anteater update:
The Two Giant Anteaters Pups That Are At The Abilene Zoo Are Developing Nicely
The male pups is thriving under his mother’s care; while the female is being hand raised and also progressing nicely.

On March 19th, the zoo announced that the new exhibit complex, named Journey to Madagascar, will open on April 10th and will feature ring-tailed lemurs, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, fossa, and panther chameleons.
Also on March 19th, the zoo announced that a (1.0) scarlet macaw named Rio passed away on March 17th.

On May 4th, the zoo announced that (0.0.2) roadrunners (species not specified) and (0.0.3) Coscoroba swans were born.
On May 11th, the zoo announced they have acquired a (0.1) giant anteater named Demo from the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Rhode Island.

On June 5th, the zoo announced that their (1.0) American alligator named Albert will be off-exhibit due to a medical examination. On July 9th, he was given a clean bill of health.

The calf was born at 1:50pm today to its 11-year-old mother Jamie. This is Jamie's third calf. She originally went into labor inside the Zoo's Giraffe Safari habitat, but then moved into the Giraffe Barn behind the scenes.
Zoo staff believe the calf is a female.

On July 25th, the zoo announced they have acquired a (1.0) nine-banded armadillo named Pickles from the Big Country Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Texas after he was found with lead poisoning. He is now a part of the animal ambassador team.

This is Abilene Zoo's second baby giraffe to be born in 2022, and there are now 10 giraffes total, which ties with the old record.
Ten or more giraffes is often referred to as a "tower," and the previous birth of Makena in June helped make this growing number possible.
