On March 1st, the zoo announced that the Reptile House will reopen to the public on March 6th,

Abilene Zoo - Guess what opens THIS Saturday.....

On March 19th, the zoo announced that the new exhibit complex, named Journey to Madagascar, will open on April 10th and will feature ring-tailed lemurs, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, fossa, and panther chameleons.

Also on March 19th, the zoo announced that a (1.0) scarlet macaw named Rio passed away on March 17th.

On May 4th, the zoo announced that (0.0.2) roadrunners (species not specified) and (0.0.3) Coscoroba swans were born.


On May 11th, the zoo announced they have acquired a (0.1) giant anteater named Demo from the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Rhode Island.

On June 5th, the zoo announced that their (1.0) American alligator named Albert will be off-exhibit due to a medical examination. On July 9th, he was given a clean bill of health.

On September 15th, the zoo announced they have acquired a (0.1) military macaw named Iris which is located in the Caribbean Cove area.

On October 26th, it was announced that the zoo hired a new Supervisor of Conservation and Public Relations.

On November 2nd, the zoo announced they have rescued a (0.1) bald eagle on October 30th. Named Lady Bird, she was rehabilitated and released on December 13th.

On January 27th, the zoo announced the name of the (0.1) steenbok born in December 2021, Jasari.

On February 16th, the zoo announced that during a 2021 winter storm, the zoo lost its Ash trees but rather than tearing them down, the facility is repurposing them into sculptures, which were completed on February 22nd.

On March 15th, the zoo announced they have acquired a (0.1) Swainson's hawk named Buella as an ambassador animal.

On March 22nd, the zoo announced they have named the main lake at the facility Tittle Lake, after the primary architect who worked on the original Abilene Zoo project in 1966, Jimmy Tittle.

On March 29th, the zoo announced they have rescued a (0.0.1) great horned owlet and will be releasing it when it gets older.

On April 4th, the zoo announced that due to avian influenza, they have decided to move some species off exhibit while as well removing waterfowl feeders. The zoo's Bird Rehabilitation Center will remain open (I know this has already been rectified but I just want to make sure all the info I report hasn't gone unnoticed on this thread).

Giraffe birth:

Abilene Zoo welcomes baby giraffe

The calf was born at 1:50pm today to its 11-year-old mother Jamie. This is Jamie's third calf. She originally went into labor inside the Zoo's Giraffe Safari habitat, but then moved into the Giraffe Barn behind the scenes.

Zoo staff believe the calf is a female.

On July 11th, the zoo announced that the (0.1) giraffe has made her public debut and is now on exhibit.

A giraffe calf was born August 12:

Malakia the giraffe is now a first time mother.

This is Abilene Zoo's second baby giraffe to be born in 2022, and there are now 10 giraffes total, which ties with the old record.

Ten or more giraffes is often referred to as a "tower," and the previous birth of Makena in June helped make this growing number possible.
