Hi everyone, I'm plan to visit Bronx zoo before Christmas, since I have never been to New York I have those questions:
1, is the Little Penguin and Inca Tern could be seen in this season? I just afraid they would closed the aviary due to the avian flu.
2, is the big-headed turtle Platysternon megacephalum easily to seen?
3, is there some species that should be see in this zoo? sorry I did not know much information of American zoo
Thanks a lot!

1. The little blue penguins are actually inside the Aquatic Bird House, so you should have no problems there unless the building is closed. The nearby Seabird Aviary contains Megallanic penguins, along with the terns. It was open on my visit in August, but not sure what the current situation is with AI. Also not quite sure how cold hardy Inca terns would be in the New York winters.

2. I’ll be honest, I think I bypassed some of the terrariums in JungleWorld, which is where the big-headed turtles are, and thus don’t recall seeing them.

3. There are several rarities that the Bronx holds, some of which are seen at very few or no other U.S. zoos. Off the top of my head: dhole, ring-tailed mongoose, Coquerel’s sifaka, gelada, Nubian ibex, gharial, Javan langur, kiwi, Peruvian pelican, and little blue penguin. There are several others on the Wild Asia Monorail, such as gaur, Indian sambar deer, Bactrian deer, etc., but the ride is only seasonal and will sadly be closed off by the time of your visit.

Hope this all helps, and enjoy! It’s a phenomenal Zoo! :D

1. Unfortunately the Aquatic Bird House is closed until further notice (not because of Avian Flu but because of construction, refurbishment - same deal with the second floor of World of Birds)
2. It should be easily seen, the tank in JungleWorld is designed in such a way that you wouldn't encounter any issues.
3. Milwaukee Man's answered that question succinctly.

I'm so excited for your review of the zoo. Your reviews have a lot of detail in them. Do you know when it's coming out?
