ABQ BioPark Zoo ABQ BioPark Zoo (aka Rio Grande Zoo / Albuquerque Zoo)

Here is a news release of the exhibit opening:

The species of Duck came from the zoos Quarterly magazine Bioscape for zoo members. The summer issue also talks about the hope for the Malayan Tigers to breed soonish with a hopeful 2025.

It appears to confirm that the Kangaroo exhibit will also be walkthrough.

  • Not confirmed by the Article or the Bioscape it sadly appears that the zoo will no longer have plans for a new Salt water crocodile exhibit. They were figured into the old master plan and on the public plan shown in 2021 on the exhibit. This comes from the arrow talking about having a focus on the dry Australia fauna for phase two.

11-year-old 1.0 southern white rhino Chopper is moving to another undisclosed facility soon on a breeding recommendation. The zoo will also acquire a new 38-year-old 0.1 southern white rhino named Mashile from the Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo in Nebraska as a companion for Bertha.

Has the bull left in the mean time? It seems from all the recommended activity around white rhino that going forward Albuquerque will be a non-breeding facililty (well and good and there past record with breeding group was not the best ....).

The zoo no longer keeps African Wild Dogs. Their last dog JD (1.0) was transferred to the Rolling Hills Zoo in Kansas. Their male spotted hyena Duba now lives in the former wild dog exhibit.

So, they are making the choice for spotted hyaena along with cheetahs for the African precinct?

How do you think about another primate spp. for both the African as well as the Asian regions?

Elephant birth watch begins:

Rozie’s pregnancy may be the result of natural breeding or artificial insemination, both of which occurred in February 2023. Paternity will be determined through a DNA test after birth.

Volunteers work in shifts for birth watch by remote-viewing so as not to disrupt the herd.

Not news related but does anyone know when the zoo's official name was changed from "Rio Grande Zoo" to "Albuquerque BioPark"?
Google tells me it was 1996, when the aquarium and botanical gardens opened.

Edit
Confirmed on the city website:
When the Aquarium and Botanic Garden opened in 1996, they joined the then-named Rio Grande Zoo to form the Albuquerque Biological Park, a unique southwest destination.
