Sounds like a gigantic cluster**** for the zoo. How do you have two saltwater crocs for four years and not get some kind of exhibit built to show them off?
 
Well, they also have a brand new Tassie devil enclosure but no Tassies, and takins for a future Asian highlands zone, but no apparent current plans to build said Asian Highlands zone.
 
Oh, they have plans and have even broke ground for construction...there has been so much delay in construction and then of course the huge increase in material costs didnt help either.
 
Really? Then I withdraw my supposition. That zoo has been difficult to fully gather what is going on there. My correspondance with them has not been terribly fruitful.

Rozie showed a little aggression, which is typical in a first time mom, so the keepers separated them temporarily. They are actually in adjacent stalls and can see each other.
 
The same thing happened with the Oregon Zoo's baby elephant. Mom was scared and showed aggression to the calf, her being a first time mom, and she never saw a birth before. After a while, motherly instincts kicked in, and she's now an awesome mother. Here's hopes that Rozie will warm up to the little girl.
 
on asianelephant.net there are new photos of rozana and the new calf daisy together, they seem to be interacting together well.
 
Pranksters break into zoo, take photos with animals
Police in Albuquerque were investigating Wednesday after pictures posted on Facebook showed several young adults recently inside the Rio Grande Zoo after hours. The nighttime photos showed some inside enclosures for giraffes, sea lions and possibly rhinos.

The trespassers fed some of the animals while others posed with a giraffe, including one man seen kissing the animal on its nose.

The zoo's director, Rick Janser, says an anonymous tipster sent police the Facebook pictures.

Janser says the people endangered the animals and themselves, and zoo security measures are being evaluated. Police have made no immediate arrests.

I guess this is the Rio Grande Zoo but apologies if there's another zoo in Alberquerque....
KOB.com - Zoo has new snow leopards
Albuquerque's zoo says it has three new snow leopard cubs.

The snow leopards were born on June 6. Officials don't yet know their gender.

Zoo officials say the baby leopards are not on display, but visitors to the exhibit can view the mother and cubs in their nest box through a live video feed.

Zoo officials also say that as of now, the cubs are the only triplet snow leopard births recorded in the U.S. this year.

The snow leopard parents, Kachina and Azeo, have produced two previous litters.

Albuquerque officials say a total of 14 surviving cubs have been born at seven U.S. zoos this year.

Fewer than 5,000 snow leopards are known to live in the animals' Central Asian range.

During the summer, the zoo will stay open until 8pm on Wednesdays.

(Too bad I just found out about this, because I will be there this weekend from Saturday through Tuesday, so will just miss it. And I love late hours at zoos.)
 
Just found this article that says they have four american alligators off exhibit, apparently in small pools behind the saltwater crocodile pools. The reptile curator wants to build an outdoor alligator exhibit in an unused area outside the reptile house, which already has the necessary water and electrical connections.

Zoo gators want a bite of state money

Of course the (much more expensive) saltwater crocodile exhibit has made no progress either. They are warehoused in plain cement tanks in what looks like a storage barn, although visitors can see them from a glass overlook.

And the area that is supposed to be the new penguin exhibit was an empty boarded up space as of my visit last summer. It was the same way when I first visited the zoo, which was ten years previous. There is also a pile of construction debris by the entrance to the africa expansion that says "future exhibit." The africa expansion opened just after my first visit, so that debris pile has been there 8 or 9 years. This zoo is just going nowhere, I am sad to see. (Not to mention their grossly outdated cat walk and some other areas that need improvement).
