Recent Intensive Monitoring Shows St Lucia Program is Heading in the Right Direction

The 23.05.2019 was a very important day for our conservation project in Saint Lucia. ‪At around noon‬, a number of St Lucia Amazons landed at the Berlin airport direct from the Caribbean island, and now become part of the safety-net population at ACTP! The new birds will contribute a significant rejuvenation of this safety-net population and very importantly increase the genetic variability. All of the newcomers arrived safely and happily in Germany and are currently in our quarantine station.

Parrots being raised at the moment at ACTP :

At least 2 Red-necked amazons
at least 3 St. Vincent amazons
at least 5 St. Lucia amazons
at least 5 Spix macaws
at least 1 Palm cockatoo
( these were the numbers I could count on the photos published by ACTP but its well possible that from these species ( and other species ) more young are being reared at the moment ).

At last some significant breeding success for the Carribean species. ACTP is doing something right!

From the Facebook-page of ACTP :

"This week was incredible...

Not only another Palm Cockatoo and four (!) Spix‘s Macaws have hatched within the last seven days, but also a tiny Fig Parrot.
The MacLeay‘s fig parrot chick had less than 3grams when it hatched and is quite a challenge for our keeper. Being the first official offspring of this species outside of Australia (as far as we are aware), the little one is very special to us ! "

At the beginning of next year 50 Spix nacaws will be send to Brazil for the release-programm !
( From Facebook ) :

Only 100 days left until THE DREAM becomes reality!

20 years after becoming extinct in the wild, the Spix's Macaw will be brought back to Brazils Caatinga. After many years of intensive work our flag ship project has entered the final straight - "spixAreComingHome"!

On February 17th, 2020 the first 50 parrots will start their journey from ACTP in Germany to Brazil, their natural habitat. First they will be held at our release facility near Petrolina, before the first group will be reintroduced into the wild.

This historical event is only possible, due to our close cooperation with ICMBio in Brazil, the Pairi Daiza Foundation from Belgium, Al-Wabra Wildlife and Scientific Preservation, Doha Qatar, Parrots International and many other partners.

From today, we will take you with us on that incredible journey, update you on the latest news, and share this outstanding experience with you.
Follow our countdown and join the little blue macaws as they recapture their natural habitat after 20 years time...
