Adelaide Zoo Adelaide Zoo News 2015

- The capybara exhibit has been halved with the family group on one side and four of the juvenile males on the other. A sign notes that the males had become aggressive to their family members and would leave soon for another zoo.
that presumably would be Auckland Zoo (going by a comment made in the NZ forum a while back).

but as we have since found out, the capybaras which came to Auckland were two females. So I guess we wait and see where these males are going.

A few updates from a recent visit to the zoo

- A new tamarin 'walkway' has opened it is an overhead tunnel which goes in a loop from the tamarin enclosures. The pygmy marmosets, squirrel monkey and golden lion tamarins will be sharing access to the tunnel.
the latest email news mentions this and has a photo which I shall try to add below.

They also have an advertisement to adopt a gibbon for Mother's Day, with the unfortunate title of "Add a Monkey to Your Family for Mother's Day".

Incredibly sad new from the Zoos SA Facebook page today.

It is with sadness we announce the passing of two long-term residents of Adelaide Zoo. Kiunga, our old favourite Matschies Tree Kangaroo was humanely put to sleep due to age-related issues. She was born here at Adelaide Zoo and survived to the ripe old age of 24, an amazing age for this species.

The large Green Anaconda which graced the pond in the Reptile House for many years also passed away last week. She was approximately 37 years old arriving in Adelaide in 1985, and measured 5.1 metres.
Both animals will be greatly missed by staff and visitors alike.

for those keeping score, that leaves a grand total of one Matschie's tree kangaroo in Australia (also female, also at Adelaide).

Although I am also confused. Kiunga is the name of the female Goodfellow's tree kangaroo imported from France in 2013. Were both tree kangaroos named Kiunga??

I assume so as the Goodfellows Kiunga was two years old at the time of her import and definately not 24! :D

Article about the new playground set to be built near the zoo's entrance: No Cookies | Perth Now

This seems to be the first new development from the Zoo's new masterplan which launched earlier this year. If it is to be built exactly as the map in that article shows it, this will be built in a relatively empty corner of the Zoo, where there were mostly "picnic areas" that replaced many of the zoo's existing hoofstock exhibits a while back. The building shown in the image is the Reptile House, and this was not supposed to remain here as a reptile collection, so may be redistributed... The playground also covers the existing Aldabran Tortoise exhibit and the crocodile/alligator exhibits outside the reptile house.

Actually, upon closer inspection of the development map on the Adelaide Zoo website, it appears they are going to leave the Reptile House as is for now, as the entrance/exits aren't changing. There is no indication that the croc/alligator exhibits will change either, but the Aldabran Tortoise enclosure will be built over. I wonder if they could put them in with the Mara for now, or if they will be displayed elsewhere?

Here's some information on the planned moves.

-Currently the former peccary enclosure is being developed to house the giant tortoises (Moats been filled in, new shelter built at the back, plants removed.)
-The alligators are being moved into one half of the capybara enclosure.
-Freshwater crocodiles are not remaining where they are but I am not sure where they will go.
-A new entry/exit point will be established to the reptile house where the current exit to see the tortoises is (formerly only accessible from within the house.)

Would the zoo replace the anaconda or maybe just put the freshies in that enclosure?

Anaconda? Do you mean alligator? The enclosures are either side of the Reptile House entrance/exit, so I think they would both likely go, but I have no idea what the plans are for their display now. The Masterplan did feature a Northern Australia zone with an aquarium, which may have included Freshwater Crocodiles.
