Adelaide Zoo Adelaide Zoo News 2022

That is indeed bad news lets hope they get to the bottom of it soon.

I had wondered if it was a parasitic infection like toxoplasmosis, but the zoo is thinking along the lines of plant toxicity - indicating the deaths were all within a short space of time (e.g. 24 hours). It’s a big blow for the zoo and hopefully a cause can be identified to help them and other facilities avoid future fatalities.

Exciting News from Adelaide Zoo

Ba-boom! Spring has sprung at Zoos SA - Zoos SA

Hamadryas baboon birth:

@Swanson02 previously reported the baboon exhibit was closed, following the birth of an infant.

The zoo has now announced a healthy infant was born to Quasi in July. Interestingly, the eldest female in the troop (Chappi) has assumed care of the infant. This is the first surviving infant born at the zoo in six years.

Little penguin chicks and Bettong joey:

The zoo have also welcomed three Little penguin chicks and a male Bettong joey.

Adelaide Zoo - Annual Report 2021-2022:

The latest annual report is now available: https://www.zoossa.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/ZSA_2021-annual-report.pdf

Some of the highlights include:
  • A Barking Owl and Black-breasted Buzzard were recently added to the free-flight show.
  • Arrivals included a female Sumatran Tiger, a male Komodo Dragon, Red-tailed Phascogales, Australian Little Penguins, and Southern Purple-spotted Gudgeons. Several individuals among the Orange-bellied Parrots, Western Swamp Turtles, Red-tailed Phascogales and Southern Purple-spotted Gudgeons were released into the wild.
  • Their two Black and White Colobus Monkey troops were reconfigured to promote breeding between genetically suitable mates (i.e. Australian-bred males introduced to the females imported from France). Tiger introductions have commenced and Komodo introductions will begin next year.
  • Several Little Penguin chicks hatched and are part of a colony regarded as the most genetically valuable animals in human care in the region, adding to the population. Several Quokka joeys were born as well.
  • Exhibit developments included a red panda habitat expansion, an exhibit for Pig-nosed Turtle in the Envirodome, a new penguin enclosure to provide support infrastructure for the breeding colony and a new climate-controlled enclosure for the male Komodo Dragon.
  • Update on masterplan: “Work continues in preparation on delivering the next major phase of the Master Plan, which will provide opportunity to connect with Adelaide’s Riverfront precinct. 250 metres of river frontage, currently occupied by aging back of house infrastructure, will be transformed into valuable animal habitat space-connecting directly with the public realm and provide a point of destination from both inside and outside the Zoo, reinforcing our goal to connect people with nature. Funding needs to be secured for this to commence.”

Visitor enters Giant panda exhibit:

Adelaide Zoo panda enclosure breached by school student retrieving phone

Adelaide Zoo has launched a precautionary review of its safety protocols after a high school student climbed into the zoo's giant panda enclosure to retrieve a mobile phone he had dropped.

While staff quickly retrieved the young intruder, the incident triggered an emergency response and review by the zoo.

It actually makes one think of what actually goes through the heads of people that do this sort of thing o_O

@Zoofan15

Good for Delilah (and Adelaide Zoo too) hope everything goes well for her birthing and cubs.

It’s very exciting. This will be Adelaide Zoo’s first litter of Sumatran tigers and the first born in the region in two years.

Staff are expecting 1-6 cubs according to their media release, but no litter in the region has ever exceeded four cubs so that must have been a throwaway comment.

@Zoofan15

Yeah sounds like a throwaway comment probably taken from a written record somewhere of the most cubs born at one time to a Sumatran Tigress (albeit probably a one off incident and would grimly imagine at least half of a litter of six may not have survived unfortunately). But back to optimism, thanks heaps for sharing the news and if all goes well for Delilah and her cubs will be a wonderful early Christmas gift/present for Adelaide Zoo (well at least for the staff and for Delilah as cubs will be too young to obviously be seen my visitors, but with cameras and the internet would imagine footage of the cubs would be available first of course).

Three Sumatran Tiger cubs have been born at Adelaide Zoo on the 21st December - a first for the zoo: Tiger cubs born at Adelaide Zoo - Zoos SA

Great news! Adelaide's exhibits are small so 4 cubs would have been a crowd anyway :D.

This also must be one of ZoosSA's best breeding years to date with -
  • 1 Hamadryas baboon infant
  • 2 Cotton Top Tamarins
  • 3 Sumatran Tiger cubs
  • 5 American Bison calves
  • 3 African Lion cubs
  • 2 Cheetah cubs
  • 4 Plains Zebra foals
  • 2 Przewalski’s Horse foals
  • 4 Giraffe calves
  • 5 Nyala calves
  • 6 Addax calves
  • 6 Eland calves
  • 20 Scimitar-horned Oryx calves
  • 23 Blackbuck calves
  • 16 Ostrich chicks
  • 1 Spotted Hyena cub
  • 5 Ring-tailed lemur pups
  • 1 Chimpanzee infant
  • Not to mention the native and exotic species whose breeding numbers go unreported throughout the year as well :)

The birth of the female Hamadryas baboon infant was a milestone in that it represented their success in forming a cohesive troop that has been seven years in the making - beginning with the failed attempt to introduce three females from Wellington Zoo in 2015 and continuing through to the three infants deaths in 2017-2019. Hopefully future births will follow.

The Sumatran tiger birth was even more monumental. Adelaide Zoo acquired this species in 1995 and had three unsuccessful pairings before the pairing of Kembali and Delilah paid off.
