Advice for Visiting Arizona?

My family is considering going on a southwest trip next December, which would involve a 3-day trip to Sedona, Arizona, and then we’d head to LA to visit relatives for a week.

We’d likely spend most of our Arizona time exploring nature around Sedona, and one day we’d likely drive 2 hours North to check out the Grand Canyon. The only problem is that Sedona seems remote as far as Arizona’s best zoos are concerned, so I wanted to check here for advice on what people thought were the best options.

The most obvious choice in Arizona would normally be the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, since it has been so highly regarded and I’m a big fan of naturalistic immersion-style exhibitry. The problem is that the museum is 3.5 hours from Sedona (which is a long drive for me) and I’ve heard mixed reviews about the museum’s decline, which has made me question whether the long drive is still worth it. If I did go here, I’d try to combine it with Saguaro National Park (or possibly Reid Park Zoo).

If I decide not to go to the Desert Museum, I would consider checking out the Phoenix Zoo instead. This place is known for saving the Arabian Oryx, is closer to Sedona (it is 2 hours away), and could be a good backup plan if people say that AZSDM is no longer worth it. My family’s flight to Arizona will also probably land in Phoenix, making this zoo convenient if I visit right after we land.

Other than these two zoos, there is also a third option, in which I would skip both places for more time in Sedona and the Grand Canyon. The fact that I will only have 3 days in Arizona is one of the biggest factors that is making me second guess which of these three options is most worth it. I’ll have limited time, and I’ve never been to Arizona before, so I’d really value Zoochatters’ opinions on what route to take (especially from people with experience). If anyone has suggestions for things to do in Sedona, that would be helpful too.

Thanks so much!

ASDM is a classic zoo, and still worth a visit even if it is not at its peak. There is nothing like it in the American zoo world, or probably any zoo world. Be sure to visit the cave exhibit, even though it does not have animals in it.

ASDM is literally in the middle of Saguaro National Park, so you will see the park as you drive. The saguaro forest is a fantastic habitat and well-worth a 3.5 hour drive itself. The national park visitor center is very cool and useful to visit also.

Reid Park Zoo is a very good small zoo. You can see the highlights in an hour. Good ABC animal collection, and a good companion piece to ASDM. Good elephant exhibit, solid South American collection.

Phoenix is a good option if you are flying in or out of that city as the zoo is not far from the airport and it is really only a 1/2 day zoo. Parking is free and they do AZA reciprocal. Phoenix is a nice, if rather standard AZA zoo.

Wildlife World Zoo is one of my top zoos, but it is a solid full day, so it may not be worth the drive over if you don't have a lot of time. Personally I choose Wildlife World over Phoenix zoo, even with limited time. It also has a nice aquarium as a part of the zoo. It is slightly more convenient if you are driving down from Sedona instead of going into Phoenix proper.

OdySea in Scottsdale is a nice medium-large aquarium if you are into those.

If you are driving up to the canyon then Bearizona may be an option. I cannot comment on it too much as I have not been, but it looks rather decent.

ASDM is one of those zoos, like Jersey Zoo and Tierpark Hagenbeck, that by their existence, created a turning point in the philosophy and design of zoos worldwide. It's influence extends beyond the zoo world. My architect wife, while a student at Parsons NY, did a road trip around the US, visiting ASDM before going on to Frank Lloyd Wrights house in Scottsdale. It would have been the only zoo she visited during that part of her life. If you are a species counter, it probably is not of much interest, if you are interested in the culture, design and history of zoos you will visit.

On a practical point, Phoenix Airport has a lot more flights that Tuscan, and for that reason I found it more convenient.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! Based on the comments, I'm going to see if I can convince my family to let us spend one day of the trip in Tucson. Visiting the Desert Museum / Saguaro National Park will be the top priority, and if I can fit in an hour or two at the Reid Park Zoo as well then that will be great too. If my family says that Tucson is too far, then the Phoenix Zoo will have to be the backup plan. While I've heard good things about Wildlife World, I think Phoenix feels more attractive to me due to their strong conservation success stories.

I'll also see how my schedule develops for the Sedona day and Grand Canyon day, but if I have extra time I could consider fitting in the Out of Africa Wildlife Park and/or Bearizona (although these wouldn't be as high priorities as the Desert Museum).
