Africa a new tv series premieres tonight on Discovery Channel.

I just watched the first episode, Kalahari, which was absolutely awesome. I can't praise it enough. The giraffe scene was breathtaking. Wow.

Plus we also got the 15 minute "filming of" featurette, which I've never seen on TV before, just on doco DVDs.

So after that 75 minutes of Attenborough awesomeness, I'm very much looking forward to next week! :D

I also think it was fantastic. Even the stock African animals (lions, rhinos, giraffes) were filmed in new ways. Pretty much everything about the episode was brilliant. I particularly liked the shot of the elephant surrounded by gazelles. And the baby ostriches. And...well, everything else.

Man, how did I miss this? If it wasn't for Amazon's (the dot.com, not the forest) built-in stalker feature, I might have overlooked it for quite some time.

Pre-ordered.

Their advertising Feb 16 in Sydney too - 6:30PM.

:p

......and you don't want to know where a hippo turns up at the end of 'Congo'! :p
what did I miss? I watched the Congo episode last night. At the end there was the beach scene with the elephants, red river hogs etc, and a couple of hippos in the surf. Was that it?

"Was that it?"?!?! There was a HIPPO in the SEA.

The SEA.

:D

I would have thought the surfing hippos of Gabon would have been already well-known to Zoochatters of your and Brum's ilk. (I mean, I don't want to sound like a pillock going "oh I already knew all about that" but I was expecting something wierder). Hippos in the sea is still cool, but not what I expected in terms of a surprise.

Wait, you actually make an effort to NOT sound like a pillock? :D Oh dear. :D

What has surprised you in recent years? I was surprised when I went to the zoo a couple years ago and saw a giraffe eating a dead sulphur crested cockatoo. In fact, I have a photo with him caught in the act (re: white feathers sticking out his mouth).

I'll put it as "I don't (usually) deliberately try to sound like a pillock, but I believe in being forthright. If a person interprets that as being a pillock (or whichever word they choose to use) then that is their problem not mine."

And seeing a giraffe eating a dead cockatoo would surprise me a great deal. (Although I have seen photos of wild giraffes eating bones for the marrow).

I wonder if DavidBrown would be interested in your photo nanoboy....

Well phrased. :D

The photo has been released into the wild for all and sundry, including DavidBrown. :) I do wonder, in retrospect, if the giraffe was merely tugging at the dead cockatoo to get the feathers to play with? Hmmm.... nah he was munching away I think. (Pic taken at Werribee Zoo in 2011.)

That's a new one on me aswell. Hippos in the ocean - looking forward to that one! Which episode is Congo?
