Africa Alive! Africa Alive

I visited here on Saturday with my family. Having a 2 year old with you reduces the time you can spend at any one place ( apart from the playground) but I did notice a sign saying a new Rhino had joined at the beginning of March. Possibly called Belle, but she came from Cotswold wildlife park. 4 Rhino's were definitely out in the mixed paddock. They also had a fairly new fennec fox male who had joined the collection. Building work was ongoing, joining the old meerkat and otter enclosures into one large meerkat enclosure. Looks like it will have a path through the middle, probably not going to look as palatial as the new Wicksteed one though.

White Rhino Belle arrived from Cotswolds on 3 March 2021 and the male Fennec Fox (with slightly droopy ears!) arrived from Drusilla's on 6 April 2021, according to signs on the enclosures. I visited today and the 4 Rhinos appeared not to be the best of friends, the Plains of Africa enclosure was heavily patrolled by watchful keeping staff all morning. But, by the afternoon the Rhinos had all settled down, and the rest animals were asleep either in the sunshine or the shade, depending on preference.

Who was the 4th rhino outside, was it the younger bull Zimba or the old one (Bud)?

Well, I answer myself :-) According to an Africa Alive’s post on Facebook it's Zimba:

"Belle is now in the process of getting used to Zimba, Africa Alive’s male southern white rhino, in the hope they will successfully breed."

Good to know, they also have a Knowsley female Njiri of breeding age.

Not sure if the older 2, male Budweiser and female Norma/Kate are still around.

Norma is still there according to the mentioned FB post:

"Arriving from Cotswold Wildlife Park, Belle has since been introduced to resident females Norma and Njiri and is now in the process of getting used to Zimba ..."

But I haven't heard anything on the old bull Budweiser ...

There is this ‘Rhinos of the World’ website that lists the captive rhinos in zoos, and their children, parents e.t.c. It says that Budweiser and Norma/Kate don’t reside there, but I’m not sure where they have been relocated too, or if they have passed away.

I did see 4 White Rhinos on my visit in April. It would also be in keeping with the zoo's track record on announcing animals deaths for it not to have mentioned Bud's passing, although it may have had a very small sign on display in the Rhino House for a few days.

How long will it be before the zoo authorities change stipulations on class A to not have trees in striking distance of fences with this and the bears the other year not to long I think

Facebook post by Africa Alive! Says closed until at least Thursday to allow the potential relocation of the pride to an alternative location and they are unable to open until this happens.

Whipsnade bound possibly.
