Africa Alive! Africa Alive

Male lion Tor passed away from natural causes recently. This leaves 2.2 African lions zero, Mo, Jabu and kaya

That’s really sad news - it was very enjoyable to see the pride when they were at whipsnade and he was a great looking lion.

If it was going to happen I think it best it was in his own home though so glad they all made it back to Africa alive together. Must be a sad time for keepers and regular visitors given these lions have lived to a very good age.

Is that the breeding/dominant male? What is the structure of the pride and it's remaining individuals, how are they related? Also very sad news but I am happy the Pride were able to spend the time they could together back at Africa Alive.

I second this, and my thoughts go to the keepers. I’m proud that whipsnade was able to offer a home when they needed it.

Zero is the dominant male. I would think he and Mo are beyond breeding age now.

According to the info posted at ZSL when they were on their holiday, Mo and Zero had Tor (along with Makimba and Sarabi no longer here, Sarabi was pts before they came to whipsnade) in August 2006, and Jabu and Kaya in January 2009.

Ok thank you, so Zero and Mo are outliving their children, impressive, I imagine it must be sad for the keepers at this time with a feeling of dread...

A couple more pieces of news from Africa Alive that I have seen recently on their Facebook page:

- Following the first successful hatching of a greater flamingo since 2019 last month, two more chicks have since hatched. They are now on-display in the flamingo house.

- A pair of African fire skinks have recently arrived and gone on-display in the Discovery Centre. They came to the park from Heathrow, where they had been confiscated as illegal imports.

Visited for the first time earlier this week. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by their collection, especially as I’d seen many reviews online criticising it as empty.

The highlight of the day was seeing the various babies. The wild ass foals are thriving under the attentive but not overbearing care of their dams. The addax calf also looks to be doing well, though her sire wasn’t being a particularly good father when I visited. Presumably, her dam must be in season, as he was insistent on smelling her and then chasing her and herding her away from her calf when she tried to move away.

I enjoyed seeing the various bird species, though the enclosures in the woodland walk seem too small. It is evident, however, that they’ve tried to make the limited space as enriching as they can. Additionally, the superb starling exhibit didn’t sit right with me at all with how dark the rhino house is.

Every time I saw them, the drills were either grooming one another or simply sat together. So they’re clearly getting along, and hopefully there’ll be baby drills around when I next visit.

The cheetahs are currently off-show as the exhibit gets updated, apparently to meet new guidelines on husbandry. I don’t suppose anyone here knows what the change in those guidelines was?

Just announced that pride leader male lion Zero has sadly been put to sleep following an examination.
It was discovered that he had "kidney failure, heart disease and multiple liver tumours"

He was 19yrs old, fantastic age. Devasting for the park having lost Sarabi and Tor earlier this year as well.

That's very sad to hear. Must be a hard time for keepers at the moment, having got them all safely back from Whipsnade. A great age though. He was an awesome looking lion who produced some lovely cubs.
