Newquay Zoo Africa and the Phillipines

Ah, fantastic. Who would've thought that little zoo in a Cornish seaside resort would be getting such rare and fantastic species like Black Wildebeest, Phillipine Spotted Deer and Visayan Warty Pigs? A great start for a bright future to come...:)

no way, i really like the raccoons and their enclosure such shame to replace them with meerkats

Ah, at least someone feels White-tailed Gnus more comment-worthy than Meerkats and Raccoons!!!!

oh dont get me wrong having such a species back is fantastic. can't wait to see the finsihed article, i'm hoping to go down for the opening (and a holiday)

White-tailed Gnu have arrived. 2.2 (from a Polish zoo - perhaps Katowice?). Nice to have them in the country again.

This is very good news. New bovid species in the UK is always good. Fingers crossed for them being visible at Easter when I'm down that way.

Katowice didn't seem to have a vast number of these when we were there - I would think this is probably the whole group if they have indeed come from there.

I thought wildebeest were a type of antelope and not a bovid. I'm not very sure though.

antelope, cattle, goats and sheep are all in the family bovidae, and therefore bovids.

I'm not certain that they came from Katowice. That was just speculation. I'm not sure which other Polish Zoos keep the species.

Oh wow, White Tailed Gnu's, very pleased to see these guys back in the UK.

Yes it is good news. But tempered with it I do wonder how Newquay will manage with them as the males can be extremely aggressive to both people and other animals- so they may not be ideal for this mixed exhibit?

Perhaps their only importing cows. I understand that mixing white-tail bulls with ostrich, zebra, waterbuck, lechwe, nyala and warthog in only three acres seems risky.

In other news, the wildebeest's arrival will be filmed on Inside Out, 7:30 BBC1 11/3, though this may be the west country service only so make sure you switch to the correct BBC network if possible if you're outside the area. Nyala & Waterbuck due in the next two weeks, and due to certain circumstances the warthogs won't be arriving till around June.

... would suggest you are under the impression that the animals are not already here. 2.2 WERE imported a fortnight ago.

Its 2.2. wildebeest so that is two potentially very aggressive males. Individual males can sometimes be absolute terrors- charging anything in sight like miniature Spanish Fighting bulls. I hope for their sake that Newquay don't find themselves with one like that.

oh my god i cant belive that they have got black wildebeest i so have to watch inside out tomorrow to see it for myself. this is one zoo i will be going to this year just to see them

Just watched the show on bbc iplayer so good to see these back in the uk looking at the sign on the truck it looks like they came from Zoo Dvur Kralove in the Czech

Christ they look aggressive!
Very impressive animals though, hope they breed.
