Newquay Zoo Africa and the Phillipines

I would not like to argue with the horns on those two male wildebeest , their attitude reminded me of a young Spanish fighting bull ! ( many years ago , after too much wine , I ended up in the ring - not a proper bull-fight but a tourist show - with a small Spanish fighting heifer , still very aggressive ) .

I wonder if they will attempt to mix them with the other species in the exhibit .

Paid a flying visit yesterday. Guineafowl out in the plains otherwise everyhting is still in the stables. Was told that the Gnus were very tempramental and had been split into 2 lots of 2. Could see one of the groups through hession screening. Ostrich arriving soon and further antelope over the next 10 days

They can be even more pugnacious than a Spanish bull- some males will charge anything that moves.

Some more arrivals for the African plains exhibit.

24th March - A pair of Ostrich and one male ad two female Nyala antelope have arrived

just received a newsletter from the zoo, from the sounds of things it looks like the spotted deer and warty pigs will be seperate enclosures and not mixed (as i thought they might be) and their expecting another female spotted deer to join the current group (one female, one male and a baby currently)

guinea fowl that were formerly free range have been mobed to the african plains and the nyala two females from marwell and one male from edinburgh

So that means Phillipines will be spilt into three for the Fishing Cat's arrival...seems like it'll all be a bit cramped.

It will be no worse than when it housed the Lechwe,Zebra,Meerkats and Porcupines in fact because all the species are alot smaller will probably look alot better even if it is split in to 3 for them.

I was going to say, it's quite a large area. Should look pretty good when it's done, although I won't get to visit in god knows how long :(

going down tomorrow without my laptop which means no zoochat for a whole week...how will i survive:eek:

anyway will write a review of the exhibits when i get back

sorry i didn't post this earleir to give you a chance for requests but i'll be sure to take lots of photographs of everything..even though i am the most inept photographer ever

Saw them both on Saturaday, the African plains is a very simple paddock and stables construction,at the moment it is not fully mixed as the Wildebeest and Zebra where been held on the hard standing and the Ostrich where fenced off in the far corner of the exhibit, while the Lechwe,Nyala and Quineafowl had the run of the exhibit,i suspect they have had a few problems with mixing some of the species together. The Phillipines exhibit is looking okay the paddock has been spilit for the deer and hogs, the deer were been held out the back but could be seen in the holding pen by the house the Warty Pigs where out in their paddock and looked very settled in the exhibit work has started on the Fishing Cat exhibit in the area of land between the back of the exhibit and the stream that runs through the zoo.
