Orphaned elephants travel from Namibia to Mexico - Story - Environment/Sci - 3 News
Apparently a import of nine African elephants from Namibia has occured. No word on gender ratio, but the animals are all aged between four and nine. These animals are reportedly orphaned due to "ivory hunters" (poachers...). I'm surprised no one knew about something this big happening at one of Mexico's best zoological collections.

I'm not questioning the care that Africam can provide for these animals, but hopefully we see some of these animals come state side in the future :D

They are an active member of AZA......

Only Africam park could carry out this operation of this side, not only in mexico but for all of north America. The anti elephant in zoos movements due not have enough influence to block the movement of these animals, at least not in Mexico. Also, of course africam is AZA accredited so the elephants will bring new elements to the breeding stock for all North America. Frank Camacho went personally for the animals to Namibia. ( Amy Camacho is currently head of enviromental affairs for the state of Puebla). Congratulations to all the africam staff who participated in this operation.

Thanks Carlos. I just really hope that the elephants will stick around Africam and set up a breeding herd here and demonstrate that zoos in Mexico matter too and do their bit too. In itself it is a great feat and testament to the dedication of the Camachos to zoo conservation and management.

I would like to see something similar with white rhinos.

And if a trade-off be made with AZA zoos north of the border that for all good purposes they send over a silverback gorilla.

According to the elephant database the gender ratio for the elephants is 3,7. If the U.S. gets anything (Africam stated they want their herd to get BIGGER) I expect it to be one or two of the males.

There is only one male gorilla, Bantu, in Mexico. He is at Chapultepec zoo, but has proven unsuitable for breeding. ( too agressive ). There are four female gorillas in mexico, Arila at zacango zoo and Chencha and her daughters at the guadalajara zoo. Arila and Chencha are wild born, so are very valuable for their bloodlines. there are photos of bantu and chencha with her daughters on the mexico galleries.

Just posted pictures of the elephants from Namibia at africam safari. They really are all juveniles and are very active. They have good space, enrichment and a pool for bathing. It has been a rainy year in Mexico and the elephants even made a mudpool which i saw them use. It was really nice to see that herd doing so well at africam.
