African Elephants in Europe 2020

Jenny, Sarah, Junglar and Ramboline moved to Knuthenborg. Their peaceful life outside the circus is finally beginning.

It is interesting to see how inexperienced activists are. They fight for elephants, but they don't even know that none of the cows in Knuthenborg can have a calf because of their age. Moreover, the breeding of African elephants in Europe has not failed, on the contrary, it is flourishing.
This is what activists say about cows in Knuthenborg and claim that EAZA will want to get them for breeding purposes.:confused: "EAZA need new genes to tackle their failing program of captive breeding."
 
While I'm agree with what you wrote about animal rights activists, I wonder why you think that breeding of African Elephants in Europe is "flourishing". Looking at the breeding results (natural or the defilish A.I.) and the stock in general, I would say it is self-sustaining at best. However, I would be happy if you could convince me from the contrary.;)

Well, it wasn't a very apt word, rather I wanted to say that it is satisfactory and not in danger of extinction. But in the future we can count on more calves. Wuppertal will still be the best (Sabie is probably pregnant again), but Akili will move to Beauval, so maybe some cows will get pregnant. Breeding is also developing in Halle or Sóstó. Cabarceno, Howletts and Boras are already large breeding groups. I also believe that Beekse Bergen will also start breeding in the future, perhaps after the death of Calimero (40 years old), who I think is the second oldest African bull in Europe. Perhaps they will get another bull and a Punda and several of their daughters will start breeding. Erfurt also has a pregnant cow and Rhenen is trying to breed Duna (with the best European bull Tusker, this is more than likely). The only unsatisfactory situation is in Valencia, so we'll see if they decide to do something about it.

This is really incredible news !!!:):):):)(Specifically, she is due to give birth in the summer.) I didn't expect her to get pregnant yet. This means that at the age of 26 he will have his first calf! She will therefore be the 4th oldest African cow in Europe, which has the first calf. Sabi in Plaisance du Touch had her first calf at 30, Opal of Colchester after AI at 28, and Heri of Basel at 28. But none of these cows had a live calf. So if all goes well and the calf is born alive, it will be the European championship! Huge congratulations to the Zlín Zoo. Now we just have to hope that they will finally have a living calf.

Personally I think the possibility Kali at Zlín will deliver a living calf is minuscule. With 26 years as first-time mother...
 
Absolutely WONDERFUL news! Not only a little cow, but the mother Chupa, is a very valuable animal, as she is the only surviving offspring of both her founder parents. This birth is the start of Erfurt being able to finally grow out a healthy, natural elephant herd.

Fingers crossed all continues to go well, and it's nothing but smiles for the new family!​
 
Hm, very interesting news!

I've heard word of Pori going to Halle, but was not expecting Panya and Ayo to go to Hodenhagen. I'm curious to see if the mothers and daughters will remember each other after all these years apart.

Even more exciting news, is the breeding potential now! Pori is 39 now and her last calf was Kando born 13 years ago. However that said, she has had 3 calves already, and Abu at Halle definitely knows what to do, so I would not be surprised to see her fall pregnant soon enough if she is still fit to do so.

As for Hodenhagen, I couldn't be more excited! Tonga is a tremendously valuable founder bull who only has two living calves. I have my fingers crossed he has much success in breeding with Bibi and Panya (if Bibi isn't pregnant from him already!)

I knew that Pori would move to Halle and that Panya and Ayo had to leave. But it never occurred to me that they would go to Hodenhagen. They now have a large elephant group. Bibi, Nelly, Veri and Panya are breeding cows. Few zoos in Europe have so many breeding cows. Perhaps Bibi calmed down in Hodenhagen and would get along well with Panya and her calves.
 
Elephant cow Pori was moved to Halle. Now she can live with her daughter Tana and her two calfs. She is separated to other elephants, but they can contact. After few days they will meet in outdoor exhibit.

It's a great step to imitate elephant's nature life, when mutter can finally live with her daughter after 12 years. I hope, that they will live in strong matriline and people will never separate related elephant cows again. It would be great, if Pori gets pregnant. I think, that 13 years it's too long time after her last calf Kando, but everytime it is possible...
 
In addition to Pori's transfer, the Berlin Tierpark also announced the two remaining African cows, Lilak and Kariba, would be moved to the Opel Zoo in Kronberg, Germany. Hopefully, Kariba and Tamo can produce a calf. Does anyone know if Lilak and Kariba will be returned to Berlin when the Elephant House is completed?

I actually have a theory about this. I think that Halle, Hodenhagen, Dresden and Opel will all end up keeping the animals they received from Berlin.

In return, Berlin, when the new exhibit is really, will recall Kando from Magdeburg, and get Veri, Nelly, and possibly Umtali from Hodenhagen. In a perfect world, Nelly would arrive at Berlin pregnant or with a young calf sired by Jumaane at Hodenhagen, too.

If Magdeburg wants to maintain a group of four young bulls, Ayo or Jumaane could be sent from Hodgenhagen as well.

This move will allow all facilities involved to maintain matriarchal breeding groups, while still making sure Berlin is "repaid" for the animals they've sent out.

I think, that Kariba and Lilac will stay in Kronberg. There is new large enclosure and they want to restore elephant breeding after long pause.
