African Elephants In Europe 2022

Tusker has been with all females since shortly after his arrival. But I dont believe in another miracle (and remember, Heris miracle may turn into a tradegy with both mother and calf dead…).

Let's hope for the very best and not think of the very worst that could happen. ;) This is of course a miracle pregnancy that has defied everything, so fingers crossed the birth can too.

It has been confirmed, the young bull Tsavo was affected by tetanus, apparently a world first in a zoo housed African elephant. Extremely sad news all the same, but in a way reassuring, as this is something that is easily preventable through a vaccine, as opposed to the devastating EEHV-HD, which of course is much harder to control and treat.

Following on the coattails of the wonderful news in the Asian elephant thread that cow Thuza has delivered a healthy female calf at Leipzig, even more good news is coming out of the European elephant population!

19 year old cow Chupa at the Eufurt Zoo in Germany is pregnant yet again, with the sire of course being 17 year old Kibo. This will be the second calf for the pair, and the birth is expected sometime in the second half of 2024. Fingers crossed all continues to go uneventfully as it did for her first birth, and the cohesive little group at Erfurt continues to grow!

Also worth noting, this is another birth that is thanks in part to the breeding powerhouse that is Wuppertal, as Kibo was born there himself out of Tusker and Numbi. I mentioned this a few years ago, and rather humorously it remains the same, as once again the majority of African elephant pregnancies in Europe are currently stemming from Wuppertal animals.

Further confirmation from the zoo can be seen here. But for anyone who doesn't want to follow the link and see the nice family picture, Chupa conceived in August of 2022, and as such, will be due around June of 2024.

And with the highs, come lows. Sadly 40 year old cow Jenny was euthanized at the Pakawi Park in Belgium, due to complications surrounding an esophageal obstruction. She was a pretty cow, and from the sounds of it much loved and otherwise fairly healthy, so this passing is extra sad. My condolences go out to her care team :(

I literally was just looking at this zoo in the Elephant Database today without finding anything that said Jenny had died!
