African Elephants in Europe 2024

On Petra Prager website, we can read that JOSEPHA, the inbred cow from Peaugres Safari Park, died on 24th February. Ettie and Kenya are still living there.

The park is giving the public the oppertunity to name the calf via a poll.
The options are "Malik" (meaning "King"), "Meru" (A national park in Kenya), and "Makonnan" (Means "worthy of respect")
The elephant calf born at BIOPARC Valencia turns 1 month old (April 2024)
The park have been giving many updates on the bull calf, including in this video celebrating him being one month old, and showing him currently in the smaller outdoor are with his mother Maya, Metzi (who he is said to be gaining a lot of trust with) and one other female. Makena, the older female calf, is spending time in the other outdoor area (I'm assuming with her mother Matla and two other cows) and the two will not be together full time yet.
The vote to name the young male is on the Bioparc Valencia website under the news page where the names and meanings behind them are given. "Makonnen" is currently leading from "Malik" with "Meru" a bit further behind.

African elephant cow Sweni will soon move from Zoo Wuppertal to Zoo Magdeburg. There she will live with cow Mwana and bull Kando, with whom she is to provide offspring in the future.

Wuppertal have now put out a follow up social media post on Sweni's move to answer any questions that arose from the announcement yesterday, including the reasons for her moving to Zoo Magdeburg, explaining her unrelatedness to the rest of the herd for those unaware and referencing how the two other cows that arrived with Sabie and Sweni (Punda and Numbi) also similarly moved away to expand their matrillines at Beekse Bergen and Vienna respectively. Some of their plans for the expansion of the elephant exhibit at Wuppertal are also mentioned.

Very interesting news, the bull Jambo from Valencia has departed for Sosto Zoo in Hungary. One can only hope that this means that he has successfully proven himself at Valencia, and that we shall see multiple offspring from him at both facilities over the next 2 to 3 years.

Does anybody have information about that why the African elephants are very skinny in Hodenhagen Serengeti Park? Jumaane, Nelly, Veri, Umtali...

It's very strange what's happening at Boras. This is already the second Panzi's calf that did not survive because it was not accepted by the herd.
I wonder if this can be caused by the fact that the births are so close to each other or if there is another problem in the group....
I don't think so, but I do worry that something is seriously amiss with managing births if cow Panzi seems to have issues with her calves (and or the herd she been born into).

Bull Jambo's move to Sosto Zoo is certainly thought provoking.

Absolutely wonderful news, a healthy little bull calf has been born at Erfurt in Germany, to mother Chupa and father Kibo. This is the second calf for the pair, and very pleasantly, it was a herd birth, with the calf’s four-year-old sister, Ayoka, present for the birth. Undoubtedly an excellent learning experience for her, and setting her up well to become a mother herself down the road.

Also something nice to see, it would seem that Chupas‘s maternal instincts at birth were much stronger this time around, which is never anything to complain about.
