African Elephants in Europe

Their equipment has 4 boxes for cows and 2 bull boxes. So I would recommend placing at least 2 cows elsewhere.

A few years ago, they announced that half of the cows would be handed over to another facility. Unfortunately, it has not happened yet. Why, I don't know.

I wouldn't recommend it anymore. The Matriarch became inexperienced Matla, with the two youngest cows (Manti and Maya). It becomes so dominant and Manti and Maya will listen to her. Other cows should go to another zoo.

Elephants could reproduce in their facility, but not suitable for a larger herd. A bull, 3 cows and calves would be appropriate.
 
I wrote a list of elephant cows that should have a baby elephant. (either the first-born and more than fifteen years old or no calves for more than five years)

Germany:
- Pori: the last calf was Kando in 2007 and at the age of 38 she still had a calf but currently they do not have a bull so she cannot be pregnant at the time of reconstruction and will probably be too old after reconstruction, Tierpark Berlin
- Drumbo: she had her only calf in 2006, but for the first time she has a natural chance of breeding with Tembo, Dresden
- Sawu: mating with Tembo was observed, hopefully it was successful, Dresden
- Mogli: she currently has a chance to be pregnant for the first time, but with Tembo too does not understand, she should have her firstborn at the age of 24, Dresden
- Csami: at the end of 2018, mating with Kibo was observed, hopefully it was successful, Erfurt
- Veri: the last baby elephant was in 2009, Hodenhagen

France:
- Ashanti: she still did not have a calf at age 16, but a bull is currently missing, Beauval
- Tana: the last baby elephant was in 2007, but the bull is missing, Beauval
- Ndala: the only calf was Rungwe (AI), currently missing a bull, Beauval

UK:
- Opal: her only calf after AI in 2010, Colchester
- Tanya: a single calf after insemination in 2002, Colchester
- Zola: three calves in 2003, 2008 and 2011, some childbirth problem, Colchester
- Latabe: at the age of 26 she could still have her first calf through AI, West Midlands

Netherlands:
- Carla: in 2006 she had her only dead calf, Beekse Bergen
- Sabi: in 2001 Abu was born, she had no other calf yet, Beekse Bergen

Poland:
- Buba: at the age of 23 she still had no calf; in the spring of 2019, mating with Leon was observed, Warszava
- Fryderyka: at the age of 23 she still had no calf, Warszava

Portugal:
- Jane: the only calf she had in 2004, Lissabon
- Luna: the only calf she had in 2006, Lissabon
- Nina: the last calf she had in 2005, Lissabon

Switzerland:
- Maya: at the age of 25, she had no baby elephant, Basel

Spain:
- Kira: the last baby elephant was in 2011, Cabarceno
- Laura: the last baby elephant was in 2004, Cabarceno
- Matla: at the age of 19 she still had no calf, Valencia
- Muti: at the age of 18 she still had no calf, Valencia
- Miri: at the age of 16 she still had no calf, Valencia
- Metzi: at the age of 16 she still had no calf, Valencia

Czech republic:
- Kali: at the age of 25 she still had no calf, effort for successful AI, Zlin
- Ulu: at the age of 23 she still had no calf, effort for successful AI, Zlin

Austria:
- Mongu: at the age of 16 she still had no calf, missing male, Wien
- Tonga: the male is missing, at the age of 33 she could have other baby elephants, Wien
 
Pregnant cows:
Chupa- 7/8 2020, Erfurt
Numbi- July 2019, Wien
Sweni- July 2020, Wuppertal
Tika- September 2020, Wuppertal

Does anyone know any other pregnancies?
 
I considered which relocation of elephants should take place in order for the European population of African elephants to flourish. There are also relocations that would be appropriate, but in no way affect the reproduction of African elephants. If someone has a comment or disagrees with something, say. I think the following transfers would be appropriate:

Exchange Niko (Amnéville) and Leon (Warszawa). Niko would behave with Fryderyka and Buba (unless it's too late!). Leon is not successful in breeding, so he would move to Amnéville to two older cows.

Tembo to Beauval. Tembo is genetically very valuable because his genes are not very represented in Europe and are unlikely to multiply with cows in Colchester. In Beauval he could treat Ashanti, Ndala and Tots.

Big exchange: Carl to Hilvarenbeek, Calimero to Peaugres, Akili to Lissabon, Jassa to Cabarceno, Jums to Valencia and Jambo to Sóstó. CARL in Hilvarenbeek could treat Punda, Bongi, perhaps Carla, and later Pina-Nessie and Madiba. Carl is perhaps the most valuable male in Europe at all, because his genes are nowhere present. In Tallinn, he had mated with both cows, but unsuccessfully (probably a cold climate). CALIMERO, due to failure in breeding, would move to Peaugres and would free up Carl's place. AKILI would move to Lisbon because the bull of Jassa is not successful. Here he would have five cows to breed. JASSA would move to Cabarceno, where they already have breeding bulls and could at least learn bull behavior. JUMS from Cabarceno could move to Valencia to cover all six young cows because he is a very good breeding bull. Two massive adult bulls would live here, increasing the likelihood of cows getting pregnant. JAMBO from Valencia could move to Sóstó because he does not understand the dominant cow from Valencia. Here he would have the opportunity to breed with Kwanza and later also with Kimani. In addition, he could teach young bull Kito bull behavior.

Jack from Basel should move to Vienna. In Basel he was supposed to treat Rosa and Maya. Unfortunately, they have failed to reproduce. Rosy is no longer able to conceive and Maya is almost impossible to conceive. In Vienna he would have the possibility of breeding with Mongu, Tonga, Numbi and later also with Iqhwa and Kibali.

Furthermore, it would not be wrong to send Erna from Warsaw to Blair Drummond. She would be company to old cow Mondula. This transfer is currently planned but has not yet taken place.
 
Two great news !!! At Dresden Zoo, Tembo also mated with Drumbo. The results are not yet known. At Rhenen Zoo, Tusker mated with Duna. I think he will probably get pregnant because Tusker is a very successful breeding bull.
 
Masa, an African elephant in Bekesbourne, died at the age of 50.:( She was called "Queen Mother". Now Tammi is likely to take the place of the leading cow.
 
Neither Sawu nor Mogli was pregnant. Tembo mated for the second time with Sawu and Mogli is now with Tembo! With Drumbo, pregnancy is probably not yet known, mating occurred only a month ago, and pregnancy is not recognizable in elephants until three months at the earliest.
 
Why does Vienna have no bull? Looking for him? Mongu would have the first calf as soon as possible, and her mother Tonga also had no calf for six years. They should certainly have many calves.

I think that's very good and exemplary, when a zoo does not tell the pregnancy of an animal, no matter which one, because nobody has to knows that except the zoo management and the zookeepers. Good zoos know that, and handle it as well. But of course nowadays everyone has to know where which elephant, which rhinoceros is pregnant in how many weeks - terrible. The main thing is to lure people into the zoo, because that is the only purpose of the whole thing.

Of course, I understand that it is perfectly fine that they keep their pregnancy to themselves. I just wanted to point out that they had reported earlier pregnancies. Pregnancy from Tana and Panya announced in spring 2015 and calves were born in the summer of 2016. By not reporting, they caused a pleasant surprise. So it's even more exciting than if we knew about it. Maybe in a short time, Panya will surprise us as well.

News from Halle:
Pori should come from Tierpark Berlin. He meets his daughter Tana and her grandchildren. Panya and Ayo are supposed to move to an unknown location (some debates about the Tierpark Berlin that they would like to receive after the reconstruction of the elephant house).
