Dudley Zoological Gardens African Hunting Dogs

I heard that the male tiger died, he was around 16 years old, but had fathered a few litters at dudley.

Re:Asiatic Lions: Do you think a new pair will be brought in, as the current female is past breeding age really. A new male would surely stress her out

Why is it that Dudley Zoo has always struggled financially, a fact mirrored by its appearance, yet Twycross is apparently wealthy(though they don't spend much of it on the collection) and Chester is the best and most ambitious zoo in the UK.

Nope , it was the old male lion that just died, the tiger went to London to breed but it was unsuccessful as far as I know.

Yes i know the male lion died recently, but previous to that there was only one tiger (female) and i'd read that the male tiger had died

I believe the zoo has always struggled because of a few reasons. Its council owned so it has not always been at the top of their agenda when it came to giving out money. The position of it in the grounds of the castle & the listed enclosures has made it difficult to work with.
The zoo has plenty of oppurtunities to get outside investment but the council have dragged their feet.

Sounds to me then that Dudley Council needs a wake-up call  The zoo could be really good publicity for them; is it really that hard to have some money raising events at the castle either?

remember in my youth watching big events in the castle like jousting & reenactments which were always packed out. These events happen all over the country whic can be very lucrative so why doesn't dudley council pull there socks up & make some changes. This won't pay for a new zoo but might raise some funds & some much needed positive publicity

stephend, that is exactly the kind of thing I was getting at. I've been to historical fairs at other castles in the rain, and the places have still been packed! It can't be that difficult to rent out the castle for fetes, falcony display, etc.

Events do take place in the Castle grounds, from memory there were a couple of music concerts last year, but these few events won't run a zoo so the ideas that other different types of events mentioned by Jacobea are a great idea and something the zoo can the council should look at working out, as the venue itself (the castle grounds)is worth the ticket price alone.

it seems the hunting dogs came from Colchester Zoo rather than our guess of West Mids Safari Park. Its just been put up on one of the Colchester Zoo threads

Finally some got it ^.^

On the other notes, the male tigers gene is well spread throught the U.K and one from the last litter is in Lisbon Zoo, the rest are in Port Lympe and Dublin (she was originally moved to chester but they moved her on)
